Applied Scientist

Amazon is seeking a highly skilled Applied Scientist to join our Last Mile Science & Technology organization. As a key member of our team, you will partner closely with other scientists and engineers to drive business impact through innovative solutions in topology, routing planning, routing inputs, capacity planning, and dispatch solutions for our last mile programs.
We are looking for candidates with a strong background in Operations Research and Machine Learning methods for large-scale problems, as well as experience in programming languages such as Python, Java, or C++. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of optimization modeling, including Mixed Integer Programming, Dynamic Programming, and Decomposition Methods.
Key Responsibilities- Design and develop advanced mathematical optimization models to drive strategic and tactical needs in routing planning, supply chain optimization, network optimization, economics, and control theory.
- Apply mathematical optimization and control techniques to design optimal or near-optimal solution methodologies for in-house decision support tools and software.
- Research, prototype, simulate, and experiment with these models using modeling languages such as Python or R, and participate in the production-level deployment.
- Create, enhance, and maintain technical documentation to ensure seamless collaboration and knowledge sharing within the team.
- Present complex technical approaches to various stakeholders and customers, and lead project plans from a scientific perspective by managing product features, technical risks, milestones, and launch plans.
- 3+ years of experience building models for business application.
- PhD or Master's degree in a relevant field, such as Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
- Experience programming in Java, C++, Python, or related languages.
- Experience in algorithms and data structures, parsing, numerical optimization, data mining, parallel and distributed computing, high-performance computing.
- Experience with large-scale distributed systems such as Hadoop, Spark, etc.
- Experience with modeling tools such as R, scikit-learn, Spark MLLib, MxNet, TensorFlow, NumPy, SciPy, etc.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $136,000/year in our lowest geographic market up to $222,200/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors, including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
