The State of Colorado is seeking a highly skilled Survey Crew Chief to join our team in the Department of Transportation. As a Survey Crew Chief, you will be responsible for leading a team of surveyors in the collection and analysis of data for various projects, including highway construction and maintenance.
Key Responsibilities- Supervise and train field crews in survey techniques and procedures
- Assist in the perpetuation of monumentation in the region under the supervision of a Professional Land Surveyor
- Responsible for downloading and editing field survey data before sending it to the PLS I or PLS II
- Operate survey equipment, including GPS receivers, total stations, scanners, drones, levels, and data collectors
- Attend pre-construction meetings with the PLS I to stay informed of current projects
- Provide project support and evaluation to assist the PLS positions and be familiar with CDOT Survey Manual policies and procedures for data collection and safety standards
- Conduct calibration checks and adjustments to verify equipment performs within specifications
- Implement CDOT's signing procedures while working in and along highways
- Conduct all office phases of surveying services, including deriving project control coordinates using Trimble Business Center
- Reduce and direct the reduction of data files from field survey work using GPS processing software
- Train less experienced staff in field and office surveying practices and methods
- Follow CDOT Survey Manual requirements pertaining to the setting of project control monuments
- Use and operate GPS receivers for OPUS observations/solutions and GPS static observations
- Gather ownership data from CDOT, Federal, County, Municipal, and court records
- Organize, sort, and archive survey documents, ROW plans, maps, title information, and field survey information
- Respond to requests for information from internal and external customers
- A high school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
- At least six years of full-time professional survey work experience, with at least one year where the primary duties included preparing final survey maps and plans
- Demonstrated success with the duties listed in the Description of the Job section
- Highest work/personal ethics and integrity
- Proficiency in the use of current survey technologies, such as Trimble GPS, total stations, and levels
- Ability and knowledge to serve as a Survey Crew Chief
- Ability to conduct thorough research independently
- Experience applying survey codes and reviewing data independently
- Experience interpreting survey data and technical information
- Experience creating right-of-way plans
- Familiarity with CDOT TMOSS
- Familiarity with researching and utilizing National Geodetic Survey (NGS) control monuments/stations
- Experience attending pre-construction meetings to address survey and land ownership concerns
- Experience training and mentoring others in survey practices
- Experience interpreting deeds and analyzing boundaries
- Ability to work under tight deadlines and be adaptable to changing assignments
- Ability to take initiative to solve problems in an innovative manner
- Ability to work with a variety of stakeholders with sensitivity to their needs, priorities, promises made, and commitments
- Ability to negotiate mutually acceptable solutions and build consensus through give and take
- Effective interpersonal and relationship-building skills
- Strong time and project management skills, including prioritization and multi-tasking ability
- Excellent reasoning, investigative, analytical, and problem-solving ability
