Job SummaryThis is a training position that provides the opportunity to evaluate the law enforcement profession and the candidate's suitability to perform law enforcement duties. The Police Cadet will work closely with assigned police patrol officers during the initial training phase and will be exposed to all types of weather conditions.
Responsibilities- Perform a wide variety of duties associated with directing traffic, maintaining recordkeeping systems, providing dispatcher services, working as a school crossing guard, conducting funeral escorts, and other related tasks.
- Learn to make detailed reports and study police procedures, manuals, and directives to develop a good working knowledge of police functions.
- Attend training classes within the division to learn new records requirements, policeman's rights and responsibilities, wearing of the uniform, legality of actions, and other relevant topics.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Graduation from an accredited high school course of study or successful completion of the GED.
- Ability to be courteous yet firm with the public.
- Must be alert and possess the ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
- Good skills of observation and memory, excellent moral character, and good physical condition.
- Must successfully pass a city physical examination, psychological examination, background investigation (to include a polygraph examination), and physical agility examination.
- Must possess a valid Virginia driver's license and have a satisfactory driver's record based on the City of Hampton's criteria.
- Must be between 18 and 24 years of age.
