Job Overview:

Under the supervision of the Epidemiology and Analysis Group Manager within the Cancer Epidemiology and Surveillance Branch (CESB), this role provides essential support to the Research Specialist Team.

The position focuses on enhancing data integrity and preparing datasets from the Texas Cancer Registry for national cancer surveillance through data linkage and deduplication processes.

Adheres to technical guidelines established by the Texas Cancer Registry's standard-setting organizations, including:

- North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR)
- National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER)
- Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR).

Generates cancer incidence and mortality datasets for internal and external stakeholders. Develops and executes SQL and SAS programs related to cancer incidence, mortality, and population data in Texas. Operates under guidance with a moderate degree of autonomy and independent decision-making.


Key Responsibilities:

Regular attendance in accordance with agency leave policies and performing additional assigned duties.


(45%) Conduct tasks involving cancer data for both internal and external submissions to NAACCR, SEER, and NPCR. This includes preparing incidence and mortality datasets following external technical specifications and generating reports from SQL and SAS for routine and ad-hoc requests. Utilize cancer-specific software (e.g., SEER*DMS, SEER*Prep, SEER*Edits) to identify and review unlikely data combinations. Provide consultation on research design, planning, and reporting.

(25%) Execute deduplication tasks to ensure the accuracy of cancer incidence data counts and to confirm that datasets are suitable for research purposes. Employ established methods and software to deduplicate data using patient-level and tumor-level fields. Recommend enhancements to deduplication processes as necessary and collaborate with internal groups, such as the Quality Assurance Team, to address evolving needs.

(25%) Integrate cancer datasets with additional data sources (e.g., death certificates or Texas Department of Public Safety) to enhance data quality or for research objectives. The Research Specialist may perform probabilistic data linkage using Match*Pro or other specialized tools. Contribute to and adhere to team documentation of technical procedures.

(5%) Undertake other assigned responsibilities, which may include participating in disaster response and recovery efforts or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation, potentially requiring alternate shift patterns or locations.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Proficient understanding of research methodologies, principles, techniques, and philosophies.

Familiarity with fundamental epidemiology principles and biostatistics essential for data management and epidemiological analysis.

Knowledge of cancer surveillance practices, cancer standard-setting organizations, and cancer disease progression.
Understanding of data linkage methodologies.

Proficient in programming with SQL, SAS, or similar data management tools.
Skilled in utilizing cancer-specific software (e.g., SEER*DMS, SEER*Prep, Match*Pro).
Competent in managing large datasets and adhering to technical instructions.
