Position Overview:

The Corporate Counsel will primarily focus on supporting HITT's operations in the West Coast and Central regions. While the ideal candidate will be based in either Dallas or Los Angeles, we are open to considering applicants from any of our regional offices in California or Texas. This role requires a robust background in the Architectural, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry, encompassing contract drafting, negotiations, claims management, and dispute resolution strategies. Strong communication skills, a solid work ethic, and a commitment to professional integrity are essential. The Corporate Counsel will play a crucial role within HITT's Legal and Risk Management Department, reporting directly to the Vice President, Counsel / Legal & Risk Management Department Head. This position may offer a hybrid work schedule, allowing for remote work after an initial onboarding period. Additionally, the Corporate Counsel will be required to travel for onboarding purposes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Draft, structure, negotiate, and review commercial construction contracts, subcontracts, and union agreements.
  • Collaborate with department leaders to provide legal guidance on various matters related to the AEC industry, including contract interpretation, disputes, subcontractor issues, compliance with government contracts, litigation, and insurance claims.
  • Manage external legal counsel and support litigation efforts.
  • Respond to legal inquiries and subpoenas.
  • Assist in tracking and reporting departmental activities and key performance indicators.
  • Develop corporate policies and procedures.
  • Lead or assist in departmental initiatives and process improvements.
  • Provide training on legal topics to company personnel.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school.
  • Licensed to practice law in the relevant jurisdiction.
  • 3-6 years of legal experience with a focus on construction law, including at least 2 years as in-house counsel in the AEC sector.
  • Strong ability to quickly understand legal and business issues, manage a heavy workload, exercise sound judgment, and provide practical legal advice in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proven ability to lead discussions with clients, attorneys, and stakeholders on various legal matters.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with strong interpersonal and negotiation abilities.
