Job Summary

As a Phlebotomist at CSL Plasma, you will play a critical role in the efficient and effective collection of plasma from donors. Your primary responsibility will be to perform venipuncture, monitor the pheresis process, and follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure the highest quality of plasma collection.

Key Responsibilities

1. Perform all aspects of the pheresis procedure and plasma collection, including donor set-up, donor monitoring, and donor disconnect, in compliance with SOPs.
2. Conduct venipuncture on donors to begin the pheresis process, adhering to SOPs and Food & Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines.
3. Evaluate vein performance of donors to identify potential issues and make necessary corrections to expedite donation time and ensure product quality and donor safety.
4. Educate new donors on the use of therapeutic products made from donated plasma, explaining the screening process, health screening tests, appointment system, donation fees, center policies, proper nutrition, and other relevant information.
5. Maintain alertness to any donor reactions and assist with reactions or notify appropriate staff as needed.
6. Record incidents that occur during the pheresis process, such as machine alerts and alarms, volume variances, and donor adverse events, using a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA).
7. Perform calibrations and verify that maintenance has been performed as outlined in SOPs, responding to and resolving complex equipment alarms or donor issues.
8. Troubleshoot equipment failures, creating incident documentation, removing, and/or replacing equipment from service as necessary.
9. Monitor donor flow on the donor floor to ensure continuous turnover, alerting Group Leaders or Supervisors of any issues.
10. Collect arm samples or whole blood samples from donors for testing, ensuring accurate recording of donor data in the electronic donor information management system as outlined in SOPs.
11. Understand policies and procedures associated with hyper-immune programs at the center, if applicable.
12. Maintain a clean, efficient work environment, ensuring sufficient operating supplies and forms are available as needed, following all Health Safety & Environmental (HSE) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) policies and procedures.
13. Maintain confidentiality of all personnel, donor, and center information.
14. May be cross-trained in other areas to meet business needs, and may be required to be bilingual to meet organizational needs.
15. Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent required. Minimum twelve (12) months experience in a medical or healthcare environment preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Working Conditions

Ability to complete routine forms or conduct routine oral communications. Ability to understand, remember, and apply oral and/or written instructions. Must be able to see and speak with customers and observe equipment operation. Occasionally perform tasks while standing and walking up to 100% of time. Reach, bend, kneel, and have a high level of manual dexterity. Occasionally be required to lift and carry up to 25 pounds. Fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions. Frequently exposed to hazardous chemicals, extreme temperatures, and to blood-borne pathogens. Required to wear Personal Protective Equipment while performing specific tasks or in certain areas. Required to work overtime and extended hours to support center operational needs.
