The primary responsibility of the Charge Nurse is to provide effective leadership and guidance to nursing staff, ensuring the safety and well-being of all patients. This role includes delivering direct nursing care as needed, particularly for patients of varying ages who require medical rehabilitation services. The Charge Nurse will assess patient needs, ensure nursing documentation is completed, and actively participate in the creation of multi-disciplinary treatment plans and nursing care strategies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Facilitates accurate communication regarding unit activities and patient status. Collaborates with the Chief Nursing Officer to address operational challenges within the hospital.
- Mentors and develops nursing staff, contributing to performance evaluations, providing counseling as necessary, and orienting new hires as assigned. Acts as a clinical and managerial resource for nursing and direct care personnel.
- Engages in the formulation, execution, and assessment of nursing department philosophies and objectives, promoting optimal use of nursing resources and evaluating nursing competencies.
- Allocates nursing staff according to patient acuity levels to meet nursing service objectives, adjusting assignments based on departmental needs. Coordinates meal breaks and ensures appropriate staff deployment during crisis situations.
- Completes all required training and takes responsibility for personal professional development. Maintains up-to-date clinical knowledge and skills relevant to patient care.
- Administers specialized care, coordinates emergency procedures, and ensures that shift routines are effectively managed.
- Serves as a unit nurse when necessary, adhering to the Registered Nurse job description.
- Performs additional duties as assigned by the Chief Nursing Officer.
- Supports the hospital's mission, philosophy, and goals while on duty and in the community, demonstrating adherence to facility policies and procedures. Promotes teamwork by undertaking other assigned responsibilities and maintaining high standards of customer service and cultural sensitivity.
- Participates in quality improvement initiatives, engages in special projects as assigned, and serves on facility committees as requested.
- Provides crisis intervention and behavior management as specified in patients' treatment plans.
- Offers constructive feedback to the interdisciplinary team involved in developing, assessing, and modifying treatment interventions to meet patient needs.
- Follows directives from the designated incident commander during mass casualty events.
Qualifications:
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities: Comprehensive understanding of nursing principles across various fields (psychiatric, medical, and rehabilitation). Must exhibit flexibility and adaptability to changing circumstances while maintaining therapeutic objectivity. Awareness of professional image and conduct is essential. Strong verbal and written communication skills are required. Demonstrates loyalty, integrity, and alignment with facility goals. Commitment to ongoing education and professional development is necessary. Ability to manage clinical and administrative responsibilities effectively.
Education: Must be a graduate of an accredited nursing program with relevant experience. A Bachelor of Science in Nursing is preferred, along with CRRN certification. Current ACLS certification or willingness to obtain is required.
Licensure: Must hold a current Wisconsin Registered Nurse license and CPR certification.
Experience: Minimum of two years of experience in a hospital setting, preferably in medical rehabilitation or psychiatric care. Prior experience in a charge nurse or supervisory role is advantageous.
