Job Overview

We are seeking a qualified Crisis Counselor to join our Emergency Services program. This role is crucial in delivering emergency interventions and ensuring compliance with the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) certification standards for hospital pre-admission evaluations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct assessments to evaluate immediate risks associated with mental health issues, substance use, or intellectual disabilities, including potential harm to self or others.
  • Perform diagnostic evaluations for individuals in crisis, assessing mental status, risk factors, and current functioning.
  • Collaborate effectively with agency and community clinicians to facilitate appropriate crisis management and triage.
  • Complete additional tasks as required.
Work Schedule

On-call availability during evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Qualifications

Essential Skills and Qualifications
  • Familiarity with relevant legal provisions in the Code of Virginia regarding confidentiality and hospitalization procedures.
  • Proficient in documenting assessments and service activities, including health records and reports.
  • Expertise in assessing and diagnosing acute mental health conditions, substance use disorders, and co-occurring disorders.
  • Understanding of risk assessment criteria, including the potential for self-harm or harm to others.
  • A minimum of one year of clinical experience with individuals facing serious mental health or substance use challenges is required.
  • A valid driver's license is mandatory.
  • A Bachelor's Degree in a human services field is required.
  • Qualified Mental Health Professional (QMHP A/C) certification is required.
  • A Master's Degree in a human services field is preferred.
  • Resident in Counseling or Marriage & Family, or Licensed Eligible status is preferred.
  • DBHDS Preadmission Screening Certificate is preferred.
