Job Summary: We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Surgical Assistant to join our team at Tree House Humane Society. As a Surgical Assistant, you will play a critical role in ensuring the smooth operation of our veterinary surgery department.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist veterinarians and veterinary technicians with patient care services, including surgery intake, discharge appointments, post-operative rechecks, and wellness exams.
  • Prepare patients for surgery, observe all clinic procedures, and enforce sterility and safety protocols.
  • Monitor anesthesia and respond to any concerns or emergencies.
  • Assist with patient restraint, recovery, and discharge.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment, including the pre-operative area and operating room.
  • Ensure all equipment is functional and report any issues to management.
  • Assist with medical exams, including fear-free restraint, vaccinations, and other procedures.
  • Clean and disinfect surgical instruments and equipment.
  • Support and follow all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and verbal instructions from management.

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in veterinary medical or animal husbandry in a veterinary hospital, shelter, or spay/neuter clinic.
  • Passion for animals and animal welfare.
  • Strong background in customer service.
  • Flexibility with work hours and ability to work additional hours when necessary.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, as well as a strong sense of personal accountability.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Frequently required to stand, walk, and bend over or stoop.

  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
  • May be exposed to unpleasant odors, noises, and animal bodily fluids or feces.
  • May be exposed to aggressive, ill, and/or injured animals, as well as bites, scratches, and infectious (zoonotic) animal diseases.
