Starting salary established at $62,212.80 / YR, with additional compensation for professional certifications such as CPA, CISA, and CIA.
Agency Overview:
The Office of the State Auditor serves as the independent auditing authority for the State of Maine, collaborating with various state government agencies to execute the annual Single Audit, which includes financial statement and federal compliance audits. The Office holds the statutory power to examine all financial records of state government entities, including counties and municipalities, as well as organizations receiving state appropriations or grants. Additionally, the Office reviews departmental budgets and capital programs to enhance the management of state resources and supports the Legislature and the Governor in financial investigations.
Key Responsibilities:
This role involves professional auditing services for the Office of the State Auditor, which functions as the external independent auditor. The position entails:
- Conducting financial and compliance audits of state government operations.
- Working independently on moderately complex audit areas and programs.
- Assisting lead auditors in planning, designing, and executing complex audit assignments.
- Providing technical guidance to senior staff regarding laws, regulations, and accounting principles.
- Reviewing and evaluating the work of other accounting professionals to ensure compliance with established accounting standards.
- Performing compliance audits to verify adherence to federal laws and regulations.
Qualifications:
Ideal candidates will possess:
- A Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field, along with two years of relevant auditing experience, or
- Eight years of progressively responsible accounting or auditing experience, or
- Professional certification as a CPA, CIA, or CISA, or
- A Master's Degree in Business Administration or a related field.

- Ability to conduct audits of governmental entities.
- Proficiency in interpreting federal and state laws and regulations.

- Experience in information technology audits.
- Ability to research and apply new accounting and auditing standards.
- Experience in reviewing professional staff work for accuracy and compliance.
