Fluid Systems Engineer

Department 413 is in search of dedicated professionals to assist in the design and advancement of VIRGINIA Class and future submarine projects. D413 oversees fluid systems, which encompass hydraulic, auxiliary, habitability, life support, HVAC, seawater, and compressed gas systems. These systems are vital for sustaining life underwater, ensuring submarine functionality, and fulfilling the mission objectives.
Role Responsibilities:
Fluid system engineers will engage in the comprehensive design and development of these systems, from initial concept through to ship delivery. This role offers exposure to various submarine design and operational aspects, fostering opportunities for professional growth, leadership, and career advancement.
Selected candidates will be tasked with the development and execution of projects that support both current and future design initiatives, modifications, and system enhancement efforts. Continuous improvement of technical and project management capabilities is essential.
Technical Duties:
- Formulating initial system/component requirements and specifications.
- Conducting calculations such as pressure drop, flow analyses, heat loads, and stress analysis.
- Innovating and refining fluid system designs.
- Developing and reviewing system diagrams and schematics.
- Selecting materials and equipment.
- Addressing emergent design and construction challenges.
- Managing system interfaces.
- Creating operational instructions for the ship's crew, along with test forms and maintenance protocols.
Project Management:
- Establishing budgets and timelines to fulfill necessary technical tasks in alignment with program milestones.
- Managing requirements and interfaces with other disciplines.
- Communicating effectively, both in writing and verbally, with internal and external stakeholders, including other departments, NAVSEA, Ship's Force, private contractors, and additional shipyards as required.
Work Arrangement:
General Dynamics Electric Boat provides Flexible Work Arrangements, allowing for a blend of remote and in-office work, contingent on the nature of classified materials handled by the department.
Qualifications:
Required:
- A minimum of 2 years of relevant engineering experience.
- A Bachelor of Science degree or higher in mechanical, aerospace, chemical (process), marine, or fire protection engineering (or equivalent), with coursework in thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and heat transfer.
- Capability to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense Secret Security Clearance.
- Willingness to travel as necessary.
Preferred:
- Prior experience with submarines.
Skills:
Candidates should exhibit a solid understanding of fluid engineering principles, a commitment to continuous learning, and problem-solving abilities. Proactive teamwork and effective communication skills, both verbal and written, are essential.
