Fluid systems engineers play a crucial role in the design and development of these systems from initial concept through to delivery. Additionally, engineers in this department gain exposure to various facets of submarine design and operation, fostering opportunities for professional growth, leadership, and career advancement.
Key Responsibilities
Selected candidates will engage in the development and execution of projects that support both current and future design initiatives for the VIRGINIA Class submarines, including design modifications and system enhancement tasks. This role necessitates ongoing development of technical and project management competencies.
Technical Duties:
- Establishing initial system/component requirements and specifications
- Conducting calculations (e.g., pressure drop, flow analysis, heat loads, stress analysis)
- Enhancing fluid system designs
- Creating and reviewing system diagrams and schematics
- Selecting materials and equipment
- Addressing emergent design and construction challenges
- Managing system interfaces
- Drafting operating instructions for the ship's crew, test documentation, and maintenance procedures
Project Management:
- Formulating budgets and timelines to fulfill the necessary technical work in alignment with program milestones
- Managing requirements and interfaces with other disciplines
- Communicating effectively, both in writing and verbally, with internal and external stakeholders (e.g., other departments, NAVSEA, Ship's Force, contractors, and other shipyards as necessary)
General Dynamics Electric Boat offers Flexible Work Arrangements, allowing for some remote work based on the nature of the classified materials involved and other relevant factors. Please inquire for more details regarding this flexibility during discussions with the department.
Qualifications
Required:
- Minimum of 2 years of relevant engineering experience
- Bachelor's degree or higher in mechanical, aerospace, chemical (process), marine, or fire protection engineering (or equivalent) with coursework in thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and heat transfer
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense Secret Security Clearance
- Willingness to travel as necessary
Preferred:
- Prior experience with submarines
Skills:
Candidates should demonstrate a solid understanding of fluid engineering principles, a commitment to continuous learning, and strong problem-solving abilities. Successful candidates will be proactive team players with effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
