Position Overview

The Clinical Research Nurse will play a crucial role in executing an intervention aimed at enhancing medication management within skilled nursing facilities as part of a comprehensive clinical study. This position will operate under the guidance of the Principal Investigator and requires a minimum of 5 years of nursing experience with a valid RN license. A Compact license is preferred but not mandatory.

Key Responsibilities

Analyze electronic health records to assess patient needs. Suggest medication adjustments based on study protocols and evidence-based practices, collaborating with an interdisciplinary team. Engage in shared decision-making with patients and their families to develop care plans. Communicate medication recommendations to nursing home staff and community healthcare providers. Facilitate the implementation of prescribed medication changes. Offer self-management support to patients undergoing medication modifications. Provide education to patients, families, providers, and staff regarding medication management. Monitor and document any adverse reactions related to medication changes.

The Clinical Research Nurse will work across various skilled nursing facilities and will follow a hybrid work schedule. Reporting to the Principal Investigator, the nurse is expected to adhere to established research practices and comply with all relevant policies and procedures while fulfilling the following duties:

Participate in onboarding activities for the study, including training on deprescribing and osteoporosis management; familiarize with electronic data collection tools and overall study structure. Assist in the creation of standard operating procedures (SOPs). Implement SOPs effectively. Ensure timely execution of study protocols, including data collection, randomization, and adherence to intervention fidelity. Manage data efficiently, ensuring that participant and study documentation aligns with SOPs, particularly for complex data requiring access to electronic health records. Oversee recruitment strategies in collaboration with the recruitment Project Director. Develop and implement strategies to maintain participant recruitment and retention, identifying and addressing any issues that arise. Attend regular study meetings and provide updates to the Principal Investigator. Ensure compliance with regulatory standards, including those set by governmental bodies and institutional review boards, while obtaining informed consent, especially when working with vulnerable populations. Prepare verbal or written reports as required by the supervisor and undertake special projects as necessary. Collaborate with the Marcus Institute, providing consultation to principal investigators and offering leadership to research coordinators to ensure successful study execution. Present findings to both professional and lay audiences through co-authored publications and presentations as required. The above responsibilities highlight the primary functions of this role, but do not encompass all duties that may be assigned, which will align with the position's level. Special projects may be assigned as needed.

Required Qualifications

Minimum of 5 years of nursing experience, including work in skilled nursing facilities and proficiency with electronic health records. Strong organizational and communication skills are essential. Comfort with videoconferencing technology is necessary. Previous experience in clinical trials is advantageous but not essential. Familiarity with electronic data collection systems is a plus. Knowledge of clinical practices relevant to older adults in nursing homes is beneficial. Exceptional interpersonal skills are crucial for fostering participation in study protocols and maintaining productive relationships with participants, families, providers, and research team members. Proficient computer skills, including the ability to use email, MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, and online meeting applications, along with a solid foundation for learning electronic data capture systems. Understanding of regulations governing human subjects research is required. A professional, proactive, collaborative, and results-oriented mindset is essential, along with excellent oral and written communication skills, adaptability to changing priorities, and sound judgment. Strong organizational and analytical skills are necessary, with the ability to manage multiple projects and innovate while maintaining focus on essential tasks. A willingness to learn and adapt to change is expected.
