Job Summary

Under the direction and supervision of a Pharmacist, performs a variety of functions related to preparation, storage, distribution, and dispensing of prescriptions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Fills medication orders, including oral, injectable, and topical medications, and intravenous admixtures.
  • Assists in the bulk manufacturing of special pharmaceutical products.
  • Prepares and distributes floor stock items in response to requisition forms.
  • Inventories and restocks shelves in the immediate work area, checks for outdated drugs.
  • Enters charges and credits into the computer for all medications and IV admixtures dispensed from the Pharmacy, documents all medications and IV solutions returned to the Pharmacy.
  • Distributes prepared medications to patient care areas and/or other departments of the Hospital.
  • Performs necessary record-keeping functions.
  • Answers telephone and assists at the Pharmacy window.
  • May rotate within hospital and out-patient pharmacy service areas as required.
  • Maintains the work area in a safe, orderly manner.
  • Follows appropriate clean room (797) guidelines in the preparation of intravenous admixtures.
Outpatient Pharmacy Responsibilities
  • Fills medication orders, including oral, injectable, and topical medications, and intravenous admixtures.
  • Enters patient demographics, insurance information, and prescriptions into the pharmacy information system, prioritizing scripts for customers waiting.
  • Processes prescriptions, retrieves correct medication, fills and labels prescription, and attaches any necessary notifications.
  • Files completed scripts in the patient pickup bins after pharmacist verification.
  • Answers telephone and assists customers at the lobby counter and Pharmacy drive-through window.
  • Updates and electronically transmits the daily drug order, monitors and documents/communicates special orders and shortages.
  • Processes daily drug order from wholesaler, stocks drug shelves, checks for outdated drugs, logs controlled drugs, and files invoices.
  • Distributes prepared medications to patient care areas, patient bedside, and/or other departments of the Hospital.
  • Reconciles cash drawer twice daily (opening and closing) and documents per policy.
  • Performs other record-keeping duties as required.
  • Assists in training of new staff and a resource for IT support personnel.
  • Maintains work area in a safe and orderly manner.
  • Cleaning and dusting of work areas and shelves, disinfecting of high-touch points such as counters, credit card devices, phones, counting utensils, and signature pads.
Qualifications

A level of knowledge normally acquired through completion of a general high school diploma program or GED.

Experience with sterile compounding and/or 6 months technician experience and/or graduate of an ASHP accredited technician training program.
