About the Job

Bernalillo County is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Park Maintenance Worker I to join our team. As a key member of our grounds maintenance team, you will be responsible for ensuring the beauty and safety of our parks and public spaces.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks such as mowing, trimming, watering, fertilizing, digging, and raking to keep parks and public spaces looking their best.
  • Assist in the preparation of soil, seeding, and sod installation to maintain healthy and vibrant landscapes.
  • Load and unload equipment and supplies, and clean and maintain basic tools and equipment.
  • Assist trades workers with general facility maintenance and repairs.
  • Deliver and assemble tents, outdoor bleachers, stands, and tables for special events.
  • Assist other park maintenance crews with tree thinning and chipping, flower bed maintenance, and weeding.
  • Learn and demonstrate the safe use of pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides, and apply them as directed.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of ground maintenance equipment, vehicles, trailers, and power tools.
  • May be required to drive work trucks to and from work sites after completing Bernalillo County's defensive driving course.
  • Adhere to safe work practices and procedures, and follow standard operating procedures for the department.
  • Perform other job-related duties as required or assigned by the supervisor.
Requirements
  • High School diploma or GED, plus one year of experience in grounds keeping and landscaping.
  • Valid New Mexico driver's license by employment date, and maintenance of a valid NM driver's license while employed in this position.
  • Ability to successfully complete the post-offer employment medical examination and background investigation.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions in English, and to perform work assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and to communicate effectively with coworkers.
Working Conditions
  • Work is performed outdoors, with exposure to natural weather conditions.
  • Exposure to occasional noise and vibration factors in the operation of equipment.
  • Exposure to dust, fumes, and mists.
  • Work is performed on even and uneven terrain, with surfaces that may be wet, dry, natural ground, or paved.
  • Work may be performed on inclines and occasionally on ladders.
  • Exposure to dust, chemicals, severe weather conditions, heavy lifting, working on potentially slick surfaces, and using power equipment.
Equipment, Tools, and Materials
  • Utilizes tools and equipment such as sickle mowers, push mowers, sprayers, weed-eaters, power blowers, pruning shears, ladders, and assorted hand tools.
  • Gloves, goggles, boots, dust masks, earplugs, and respirators are used in the performance of essential duties.
  • Operates various types of County vehicles in the performance of essential duties.
