About Nexus Management

Nexus Management is a dynamic grassroots organization dedicated to advocating for political, social, racial, economic, and environmental equity. We empower individuals at the community level, collaborating with various organizations and coalitions across New York to tackle pressing issues on local, state, and federal fronts.

Role Summary

Nexus Management is seeking a Community Engagement Coordinator for Staten Island. This role will report to the Regional Director and is primarily focused on expanding our volunteer base, particularly within the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) and other affordable housing sectors where we have established a member presence. The objectives are twofold: 1) to increase state funding for investment in New York and advance priority campaign issues, and 2) to collaborate with leaders and members to devise outreach strategies that engage the community and strengthen the chapter's political influence. The ideal candidate will be personable and adept at employing traditional organizing methods to enhance the organization.

Core Responsibilities

  • Chapter Development: Recruit members who contribute dues and assist in managing the regional board. Utilize issue-based and electoral campaigns to expand the chapter through effective outreach strategies aimed at cultivating a dedicated volunteer base.
  • Outreach and Recruitment: Develop a comprehensive outreach and recruitment strategy in conjunction with leader development for chapter meetings, committee gatherings, mobilization efforts, and campaign initiatives. Implement organizing tactics such as phone banking, text outreach, and canvassing to increase chapter membership. Lead weekly outreach activities with members.
  • Administrative Duties: Collaborate with staff to oversee the chapter's VAN requirements, including updating records with weekly one-on-ones, volunteer activities, and profiles. Partner with the Data Coordinator to create recruitment phone banks and canvassing lists.
  • Legislative Engagement: Work alongside the NYC team and member leaders to formulate outreach strategies aligned with legislative campaigns during the planning stages and support committee management throughout legislative sessions.
  • Electoral Coordination: Recruit members and leaders for the endorsement committee and assist the Regional Director in coordination efforts.
  • Communications: Support the Regional Director in generating content for emails, social media, editorials, and collecting local narratives that amplify our campaigns.

Qualifications

  • Proven ability to demonstrate skills, recruit, and train volunteers in core organizational activities (recruitment, campaign tools, communications, etc.).
  • Effectively apply the organization's training methodology, including demonstrating skills, collaborating with member leaders, tracking and analyzing results, and providing constructive feedback.
  • Commitment to achieving ongoing outreach objectives (phone banking, one-on-ones, canvassing, etc.), which are essential for building robust regional chapters.
  • Demonstrated success in recruiting and developing leadership among volunteers/member leaders, including managing phone banks, canvassing, event planning, lobbying, and facilitating workshops and meetings.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills; a strong communicator in both in-person and virtual settings.
  • Creative problem-solving abilities, with strong analytical, strategic, and planning skills aimed at meeting organizational goals.
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends to accommodate member leaders' availability.
  • Strong planning skills, both personally and professionally.
  • Excellent relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative.
  • Open-mindedness and receptiveness to direction.
  • Motivation and dedication to the mission and progressive change.
  • Capability to teach and facilitate meetings/groups/committees/volunteers.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to engage in collaborative thought partnership with supervisors.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build trust and maintain relationships with community partners and colleagues.
  • Ability to travel as needed, including having a reliable vehicle and valid driver's license.
  • Strong facilitation skills, particularly in educating NYCHA tenants on relevant policies. Training and resources will be provided.
  • Ability to simplify complex policies or systems for accessibility.

Preferred Attributes

  • Fluency in Spanish is highly desirable.
  • Ideal candidates will have local experience or a strong understanding of Staten Island's community and political landscape.
