As a Clinical Nutrition Specialist on the Inpatient Nutrition Support Team, your role will involve delivering medical nutrition therapy to critically ill patients or those with intricate medical conditions requiring specialized nutrition support.

Clinical Nutrition Specialists evaluate patients for nutritional inadequacies, formulate and execute intervention strategies, work in tandem with other healthcare providers to enhance nutrition care, and contribute to departmental and institutional goals.


The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A bachelor's degree in nutrition, dietetics, or a related discipline.
  • Completion of a dietetic internship or an accredited program.
  • A valid license to practice dietetics in the State of Ohio (LD) and active certification as a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist (RD/RDN).
  • A minimum of one year of experience as a Registered Dietitian in clinical nutrition.

Key Responsibilities:

+ Deliver direct patient care through medical nutrition therapy for designated patient groups requiring nutrition support therapies (including parenteral nutrition, enteral nutrition, and intravenous fluids with various dietary modifications). This applies to dietitians whose patient care responsibilities are primarily focused on intensive care unit patients or those involved in specialized nutrition support teams. Collaboration with healthcare providers is essential to develop nutrition care plans due to the high safety risks involved.+ Conduct assessments for signs of nutritional deficiencies and perform nutrition-focused physical examinations. Review electronic medical records to understand the patient's clinical status. Evaluate nutritional requirements, including calories, protein, fluids, and electrolytes; diagnose and document malnutrition; and collaborate with providers to address the nutritional needs of patients on oral diets, tube feedings, and parenteral nutrition.+ Implement a comprehensive nutritional care plan, communicate the strategy, establish a follow-up system, and maintain accurate documentation.+ Write orders for diets, oral supplements, tube feedings, and manage parenteral nutrition orders.+ Provide counseling and educational services to patients with conditions requiring nutritional management.+ Support the dietetic internship program as a preceptor and class instructor, coordinating activities of dietetic technicians if assigned.+ Develop and contribute to educational programs sponsored by Cleveland Clinic for physicians, nurses, allied health professionals, students, peers, and the public.+ Create and update educational materials related to disease management through medical nutrition therapy.+ Actively participate in departmental strategic initiatives, committees, and projects.+ Engage in professional development activities; attend and contribute to conferences and seminars on nutrition and related subjects.+ Represent Cleveland Clinic on nutrition-related matters within the team/unit.+ Participate in clinical research and/or quality improvement projects. Utilize clinical software applications to enhance patient care.+ Adhere to all regulatory and professional organization standards, including CMS, The Joint Commission, and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Follow established policies and procedures of the department and Cleveland Clinic.+ Perform other duties as assigned.

Education Requirements:

+ Bachelor's degree in nutrition, dietetics, or a closely related field. Completion of a Dietetic Internship or an accredited program.

Certification Requirements:

+ Maintain a current license to practice dietetics in the State of Ohio (LD) and active certification as a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist (RD/RDN).+ Must obtain and maintain Board Certification as a Certified Nutrition Support Clinician (CNSC) within two years of hire/assignment (adult services); Certified Specialist in Pediatrics (CSP) is required for all pediatric dietitians.

Complexity of Work:

+ Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work independently or with minimal supervision within the healthcare team.+ Must be capable of functioning in a high-pressure environment and taking appropriate actions.

Work Experience:

+ Preferably two years of relevant experience; a minimum of one year of experience as a Registered Dietitian in clinical nutrition.+ Successful completion of the Cleveland Clinic Dietetic Internship Program or an equivalent may substitute for the experience requirement.

Physical Requirements:

+ Ability to navigate extensively to provide services to a large patient population across various hospital and clinic locations. Must possess manual dexterity to perform computer entries and nutrition-focused physical examinations.+ Must have the physical capability to measure and weigh ambulatory patients.
