Position Title: Senior Geophysical Engineer – Lead Field Engineer for Global Instrumentation Networks

Employment Status: Full-Time/Exempt

Remote Work Options: Hybrid, San Diego, CA or Socorro, NM, USA

Travel Requirements: Up to 50%

Compensation Range: $90,288 - $135,432 (based on experience)

Position Summary:

The Senior Geophysical Engineer operates with minimal supervision to oversee and manage technical geophysical initiatives of moderate complexity, engaging multiple stakeholders and technologies that may span several years. As the technical authority, the incumbent will orchestrate and supervise field operations at various sites across the United States, polar regions, and other international venues. The engineer collaborates with peers to develop innovative solutions to technical challenges. Recognized as a subject matter expert for designated projects, the Senior Engineer is expected to propose new methodologies and implement established protocols that align with best practices, operational standards, and the mission of EarthScope. This role includes training engineers and users to ensure adherence to high technical and organizational standards. Engineers serve as representatives of these principles to scientists, landowners, sponsors, and community members. The Senior Engineer will report to the Engineering Manager within assigned project and functional areas.

Key Responsibilities:

Essential Duties:

  • Serve as the technical lead for the execution of geophysical projects that involve multiple technologies and require collaboration with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • With general guidance, establish strategies for planning and executing project scopes, which may include logistics, site reconnaissance, permitting, installation, maintenance, network configuration, instrument operation, and data flow management.
  • Independently identify and resolve complex technical issues, applying creativity and innovation.
  • Integrate and troubleshoot geophysical technologies, firmware, software, metadata, and sensor-related infrastructure.
  • Contribute to the design and testing of new complex systems.
  • Produce comprehensive technical documentation for assigned projects.
  • Prepare project budgets of moderate scope and monitor expenditures.
  • Provide financial and operational insights and assist in proposal development as needed.
  • Foster collaborative relationships with other departments within EarthScope on joint projects.
  • Maintain positive relationships with community members, suppliers, landowners, and business partners.
  • Other duties may be assigned as necessary for the effective operation of EarthScope.

Leadership and Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • This role does not entail direct supervisory responsibilities.
  • May coordinate tasks with other engineering staff.
  • Collaborate with staff across the organization to ensure project completion.
  • Provide technical guidance to team members.
  • Act as the lead engineer and primary contact when serving as the ranking engineer in the field.
  • Promote a professional culture through effective communication and team-building skills.
  • Ensure clear and effective communication with team members to meet deadlines and uphold best practices.

Qualifications:

Minimum Education & Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience in engineering, geosciences, or a related field with seven (7) years of experience with geophysical sensors or networks.
  • OR
  • Master's degree or equivalent professional experience in engineering, geosciences, or a related field with four (4) years of field experience with geophysical sensors or networks.

Preferred Skills:

  • General understanding of geophysical data processing.
  • Familiarity with data quality analysis software.
  • Proficiency in computer programming or scripting languages.
  • Experience leading field teams for geophysical instrumentation deployments.
  • Experience in systems engineering and design.

Other Requirements:

  • Availability consistent with EarthScope's established practices; hours may exceed 40 hours per week, especially during travel.
  • Must maintain relevant safety training for field operations.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • Frequent travel by various means, including commercial or contracted transport.
  • A valid passport is necessary for international projects.
