Mission of the Unit: The primary objective of this unit is to lead rehabilitation efforts within the Commonwealth of Virginia, enhancing the quality of life for individuals with disabilities. This is achieved by promoting independence in daily living, recreational activities, and employment through innovative educational initiatives, evidence-based research, and patient-centered care focused on outcomes. The unit addresses the needs of individuals with disabilities through various grant and contract initiatives related to traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, employment support, disability benefits, and overall quality of life enhancement.

Key Purpose of the Role: The main aim of this position is to elevate patient care, research, and educational missions through direct clinical interactions, conducting clinical research, and mentoring residents, medical students, and other trainees. This role involves providing outpatient general rehabilitation services.

Responsibilities:

Clinical Duties:
  • Primary responsibilities include delivering outpatient general rehabilitation services.
  • Participation in the call rotation for rehabilitation services is expected.
  • Ensure the management and quality of care provided is maintained at a high standard.
  • Offer consultations upon referrals from medical facilities with established relationships with the department.
  • Prepare regular reports on patient care for the Medical Director of Rehabilitation.
  • Ensure that all medical services are documented and signed in accordance with institutional and payer policies.
  • Assist in developing referral sources for the medical center.
  • Collaborate with billing professionals to ensure accurate charge preparation for services rendered and review non-reimbursed billings.

Educational Responsibilities:
  • Supervise residents, fellows, and other learners within the clinical environment.
  • Participate in the orientation of new house staff and students to the rehabilitation program.
  • Contribute to the development of the core curriculum, including recommended reading materials for house staff and students.
  • Assist in evaluating the performance of house staff and students after each rotation.

Research Involvement:
While not the primary focus of this role, participation in research activities and support for ongoing and new projects is encouraged, aligning with clinical care objectives.

Service Contributions:
  • Engage in university and departmental committees as requested.
  • Contribute to the field of Physiatry through involvement in professional organizations.

Additional Duties:
  • Represent the department in official meetings as needed.
  • Attend scheduled Grand Rounds and staff conferences as well as lectures when requested.
  • Maintain professional credentials and complete required educational activities as mandated by the hospital, university, and state practice organizations.

Required Qualifications:
  • Medical Degree (MD or DO).
  • Successful completion of a PM&R Residency.
  • Strong academic and clinical credentials, with a proven ability to initiate new clinical programs, along with effective communication and leadership skills. Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment is essential.
  • Demonstrated experience in fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or a commitment to do so as a faculty member.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • ABEM certification or significant experience in electrodiagnostic medicine.
  • Experience in managing and refilling baclofen intrathecal pumps.
