The primary objective of this role is to advocate for, sustain, and enhance both individual and community health by guiding individuals and communities towards healthier lifestyle choices, particularly in the realm of sexual health. The Health Education Specialist will engage with individuals living with HIV (PLWH) to reduce the transmission of the virus and work with at-risk groups to prevent the acquisition of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). This will be accomplished through a variety of testing, networking, counseling, educational, and evaluative initiatives.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Administers HIV and STD testing in compliance with state health regulations and established agreements.
- Implements evidence-based prevention strategies in alignment with CDC and funding agency protocols.
- Collaborates with management to organize outreach efforts, build networks, and establish partnerships with local community organizations.
- Engages in social marketing and networking activities to attract and recruit high-risk populations for testing and educational programs.
- Works alongside program staff to facilitate seamless connections to care for newly diagnosed individuals.
- Creates and delivers educational sessions on HIV/STD prevention and health promotion for patients and community members.
- Identifies obstacles, formulates treatment plans, and provides tailored support to patients based on their unique health education needs.
- Partners with management to design and execute evaluations assessing the quality and effectiveness of health education initiatives.
- Collaborates with community health personnel, program staff, and local organizations to gather and analyze data to identify community health needs and service availability, contributing to the development of strategies to address these needs.
- Offers individual or group counseling and educational support to patients as required.
PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to sit for up to 4 hours daily, with a maximum of 2 hours at a time. Stand for up to 6 hours daily, with a maximum of 3 hours at a time. Walk for up to 6 hours daily, with intervals of 20 minutes. Frequent use of hands and fingers. Regularly lift, carry, and push objects weighing up to 25 lbs. Frequently bend and stoop. Reach above shoulder level as needed. Must possess tactile perception to assess objects. Ability to hear normal conversations and various frequency ranges. Visual acuity for general, near, far, color, and peripheral vision.
EDUCATION:
A Bachelor's degree in a human services-related field is required.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
A minimum of one year of experience in public health programs is required. Experience working with low-income and diverse populations is preferred. Strong ability to engage and maintain positive relationships within a diverse community. Phlebotomy training or willingness to undergo training is required. Bilingual proficiency in Spanish is highly preferred.
