Burns & McDonnell's Kansas City office is seeking a Staff Environmental Scientist to support, manage, and develop business for environmental surveys, NEPA analysis, and permitting services. This position offers the opportunity to challenge and grow professionally within one of the industry's leading firms. You'll be part of a team that solves clients' issues and problems for environmental and engineering practices in the planning, permitting, design, and remediation service space.

The ideal candidate will have an established history executing tasks for both small and large-scale projects, including developing proposals and cost estimates, executing project tasks, and developing strategic plans. You'll support and execute environmental projects and be a technical author on various NEPA and siting documents, covering areas such as NEPA, routing and siting, and permitting.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Preparing studies, evaluations, NEPA and state documentation for all types and sizes of environmental projects;
  • Ability to work independently and demonstrate competence in technical report writing related to NEPA compliance and other types of technical reports and regulatory permitting documents;
  • Experience with environmental compliance, permitting, and agency consultations;
  • Working with clients, resource agencies, environmental and technical staff to prepare environmental documents and related technical studies;
  • Developing, cultivating, and strengthening relationships with clients;
  • Assist with developing business for the Kansas City Environmental Services Global Practice;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • B.S. or M.S. in Environmental Science, Planning or Natural and/or Cultural Resources Management or related field from an accredited university;
  • Minimum 4 years related professional experience (consulting experience highly preferred);
  • Specific experience in electric transmission, transportation, renewables, and other similar markets is preferred;
  • Local and regional knowledge and relationships with existing clients is preferred;
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills are required to develop and maintain relationships;
  • Solid time management and follow-through skills, with the ability to simultaneously work on and manage multiple tasks/projects with tight deadlines;
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills;
  • Proficient with GPS and excellent writing skills;
  • Strong experience working in the ArcGIS Pro environment;
  • Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office suite;
  • Strong experience working with both private and public-sector clients;
  • Business development in both sectors is beneficial.
