About the Role:

We are seeking an experimental quantum physicist or engineer to join our dynamic team at Jacobs, supporting our customer in the national capital region. In this position, you'll be part of a team conducting fundamental and applied quantum optics research addressing unique issues that require creative solutions. U.S. citizenship is required, and the ability to obtain and/or maintain a secret level security clearance is necessary.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct experimental research in quantum optics, including the development and implementation of novel measurement techniques.
  • Collaborate with a team of researchers to design and execute experiments, analyze data, and draw conclusions.
  • Develop and maintain a strong understanding of quantum mechanics, quantum field theory, and related areas of physics.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in quantum optics and related fields, and apply this knowledge to drive innovation in our research.
  • Communicate research findings and results to both technical and non-technical audiences, including through presentations, reports, and publications.

Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in experimental or applied physics, optics, or a closely related field.
  • Ability to obtain and/or maintain a secret level security clearance.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a strong focus on collaboration and teamwork.
  • 10% travel per year, with occasional overnight stays.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in quantum sensors and quantum clocks.
  • Experience with atom interferometry.
  • Demonstrated skills in creative or independent problem-solving.
  • Experience with atomic cooling and trapping techniques.
  • Experience with inertial sensing.
  • Experience with entanglement, spin squeezing, or active superradiant emission.
  • Experience with readout based on quantum nondemolition measurement.
  • Experience with interrogation of nonclassical optical fields.
  • Experience building custom optical characterization experiments and/or equipment.
  • Familiarity with common computer languages, such as Matlab, Comsol, Python, etc.
