Job Summary

The Medical Laboratory Assistant is a vital member of the St. Luke's Laboratories team, responsible for supporting pre-analytical and post-analytical functions. This role promotes quality and patient safety while performing specimen collection and processing. The Medical Laboratory Assistant I is responsible for gaining competencies in collection, receiving, and distribution of specimens and samples to the appropriate area, as well as day-to-day tasks of information collection, correlation, and distribution. Additionally, this role is responsible for providing exceptional customer service to the laboratory.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Experience: Six (6) months of lab experience or CNA, or MA.
  • Licensure/Certification/Registration: Not applicable.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Education: Not applicable.
  • Experience: Six (6) months of phlebotomy experience or one (1) year of medical laboratory experience.
  • Licensure/Certification/Registration: Not applicable.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Computerized data management systems, including operation of a computerized data management system, and routine billing procedures.
  • Able to maintain accurate and complete records and maintain strict confidentiality with regards to patient information.
  • Excellent customer service skills, including the ability to effectively greet the public, work well with patients and Hospital employees, and communicate effectively with all kinds of people.
  • Able to accurately maintain sample and report identity using patient name and identification number through sample receipt, processing, and reporting.
  • Able to follow directions and perform tasks outlined in procedure.
  • Able to exercise judgment and take responsibility to maintain patient health and safety during specimen collection.
  • Able to organize work and meet deadlines.
  • Able to follow through with internet searches of tests.
  • Requires depth of knowledge in the area of laboratory medicine.
  • Understands hazardous materials encountered and treats them in an appropriate manner.

    • Able to see, hear, and speak in English.
    • Able to lift up to thirty-five (35) pounds.
    • Stand - Continuously over 2/3 hours.
    • Walk - Continuously over 2/3 hours.
    • Sit - Frequently 1/3 to 2/3 hours.
    • Use hands to finger, handle, or feel - Continuously over 2/3 hours.
    • Reach with hands and arms - Frequently 1/3 to 2/3 hours.
    • Stoop, squat, kneel, or crouch - Occasionally under 1/3 hours.
    • Bending-repetitive forward - Occasionally under 1/3 hours.
    • Talk or hear - Continuously over 2/3 hours.
Lifting Requirements
  • Up to 10 pounds - Continuously over 2/3 hours.
  • Up to 25 pounds - Frequently 1/3 to 2/3 hours.
  • Up to 35 pounds - Occasionally under 1/3 hours.
Work Environment
  • Typical Noise Level - Moderate noise (examples: business office with computers and printers, light traffic).
  • Regularly exposed to risk of blood-borne diseases.
  • Exposed to reagents used in laboratory testing; may be exposed to/occasionally exposed to unpleasant patient elements.
  • Exposed to hazards from electrical and mechanical equipment.
