Position Overview

The role of the Asset Inventory Specialist is crucial in maintaining the Asset Register, which encompasses a comprehensive system of records, including spatial databases, reference drawings, and documentation related to all infrastructure assets managed by the department. The individual in this position will conduct a range of asset inventory inspections on various infrastructure, including stormwater, transportation, and traffic management systems, and will collaborate with the Public Works Geomatics Asset Inventory Team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conducts condition assessments on stormwater assets and promptly reports any failures.
  • Reviews project area As-Built plans for data collection purposes.
  • Investigates project areas to digitize new or unreported features, ensuring accurate representation of stormwater, telecommunications, and transportation assets.
  • Performs quality assurance on field-collected GIS data.
  • Reports discrepancies between As-Built and field findings to management.
  • Engages in advanced heads-up digitizing in an office setting, including spatial overlays and quantifying work output.
  • Utilizes work management software as needed to plan activities for asset collection teams.
  • Verifies and updates as-built Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data in the field to ensure accurate geographic representation of stormwater systems.
  • Ensures the completeness of records in the online GIS database.
  • Maintains field data collection equipment, ensuring it is clean, organized, and ready for use at all times.
  • Performs basic heads-up digitizing in an office environment, including fundamental quality control tasks.
  • Undertakes related duties as required.

Job Specifications

  • Extensive knowledge of GIS mapping.
  • Proficient in spatial data collection techniques.
  • Familiarity with geodatabases.
  • Understanding of complex stormwater, transportation, and telecommunications infrastructure.
  • Ability to interpret aerial photographs, blueprints, field survey notes, deeds, plats, parcel data, engineering plans, and sketches.
  • Proficient in using technical devices such as tablets, smartphones, and computers, along with the necessary software.

Physical Requirements

  • Regularly works in built environments and right-of-way, outdoors in various weather conditions, and occasionally on rugged terrain.
  • Involves sitting, driving, walking, lifting, kneeling, bending, stooping, carrying tools, and possibly manual digging to investigate or verify infrastructure.
  • Occasional office work is required.

Work Category

  • Light Work - Involves exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED; AND
  • Two (2) years of experience in field data collection; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-related competencies noted above.

Emergency Management Responsibilities

In the event of an emergency or disaster, the employee may be required to respond promptly to duties and responsibilities as assigned by the department or relevant authorities. Such assignments may occur before, during, or after the emergency or disaster.
