Overview

As a District Supervisor within the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), you will play a pivotal role in managing wildlife damage control initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Your primary responsibilities will encompass the planning, development, organization, and administration of intricate operational and technical assistance programs aimed at effectively mitigating wildlife damage that negatively affects agricultural productivity, public health and safety, property, and ecological resources.

The specific duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Overseeing the activities of federal and, where applicable, collaborative personnel, which may include subordinate supervisors, administrative staff, and wildlife biologists.
  • Strategically planning tasks for team members, setting and adjusting both short-term and long-term priorities, and preparing timelines for task completion.
  • In collaboration with management, determining necessary staffing levels and organizational frameworks in relation to budgetary constraints and project requirements.
  • Conducting interviews, selecting, and hiring candidates for various positions in conjunction with management.
  • Authorizing within-grade increases, overtime, leave, and travel for subordinate employees.
  • Acting in the capacity of a higher-level supervisor or manager as needed.
  • Assisting in the formulation and execution of strategic plans in alignment with agency directives and program requirements.
  • Adapting established wildlife damage management strategies to accommodate local environmental conditions and specific economic or political factors.
Compliance and Research

Within your unit, you will ensure adherence to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), relevant state environmental regulations, and other applicable federal and state laws.

You will also identify potential areas for research or developmental studies to enhance wildlife management practices.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all eligibility criteria by the closing date of the announcement, including time-in-grade restrictions, specialized experience, and/or educational requirements.

Basic Requirement:

A degree in biological science with specific coursework in wildlife subjects, zoology, and botany is required.

Additionally, applicants must possess specialized experience or equivalent education relevant to wildlife management.

Experience Requirements

Applicants must demonstrate one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level, which includes:

  • Human resources management and supervision of a diverse workforce.
  • Negotiating interagency agreements for wildlife damage management.
  • Planning and coordinating compliance with environmental regulations.
  • Implementing strategies to resolve wildlife damage conflicts.
