Job Summary:
We are seeking a skilled Phlebotomist to join our team at Advocate Health. The successful candidate will be responsible for collecting blood and other medical specimens from patients, ensuring accurate identification and labeling, and maintaining a safe and efficient work environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Verify patient identification to ensure safety and accuracy
- Assess patient reactions to specimen procurement and provide assistance as needed
- Collect blood and other medical specimens from newborn, pediatric, and adult patients according to established protocol
- Obtain medical assistance when necessary and ensure completion of specimen collection functions according to protocol
- Ensure specimens are properly labeled and suitable for testing, resolving any identification or requisition problems
- Answer and screen telephone calls, assist with inventory, and maintain supplies and equipment
- Accept specimens from internal and external customers, receive and sort specimens, and respond to additional procurement requests
- Order and verify test requests, document information for quality assurance, and review pending and management reports
- Provide assistance in support of billing and other business functions, and instruct employees and students in phlebotomy and data entry
Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- 1 year of phlebotomy experience preferred
- Basic computer skills, including experience with software applications, keyboarding, and typing
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, good listening skills, and ability to work in a fast-paced environment
- Demonstrated customer service skills to interface effectively with physicians, patients, visitors, and other healthcare employees
Working Conditions:
- Operate all necessary equipment
- Frequently lift up to 10 lbs, occasionally lift up to 50 lbs
- Must be able to sit, stand, walk, and bend for the majority of the workday
- May be exposed to mechanical, electrical, chemical, radioactive, and/or infectious agents
- Will be exposed to human blood and body fluids
