Position Overview

Role Summary:
The Certified Medical Assistant I provides essential clinical and administrative assistance to healthcare providers and team members in an outpatient clinic environment. This role operates under the clinical oversight of the provider for patient care tasks and under the general guidance of the designated manager for non-clinical duties.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Conducts the rooming and intake process, gathering vital data such as vital signs, height, weight, and information pertinent to the patient's visit.
2. Collects comprehensive patient and family information, including medical and social history.
3. Reviews the patient's current medication list, allergies, and preferred pharmacy.
4. Aids the provider during treatments, examinations, and procedures as instructed.
5. Collects specimens and performs phlebotomy as needed.
6. Administers medications under the provider's direction.
7. Conducts tests, such as EKGs and eye exams, under the provider's supervision.
8. Evaluates the patient record to identify necessary routine health screenings.
9. Ensures that exam and procedure rooms are stocked with appropriate supplies, equipment, forms, and educational materials for use during visits.
10. Provides patients with after-visit instructions, follow-up care, self-care guidance, or educational materials as directed.
11. Prepares, cleans, stocks, and maintains exam and treatment areas.
12. Cleans and sterilizes medical instruments.
13. Assists with patient registration, check-in/check-out processes, appointment scheduling, and referrals.
14. Answers clinic phone calls and manages in-basket tasks under the direction of a provider or nurse.
15. Assists in emergency situations as directed by a provider or nurse.

Additional Information:
Education Requirements:
● No specific education required if other qualifications are met.
● Completion of a Medical Assisting program accredited by CAAHEP or ABHES is strongly preferred but not mandatory.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
● Medical Assistant certification from AAMA, AMT, CCMA, NRCMA, or NCMA is required.
● Basic Life Support Certification from AHA or ARC is mandatory.
Professional Experience Requirements:
● Previous experience as a medical assistant or in a medical assistant externship is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
● Ability to perform essential functions of the position as outlined.
● Effective communication and interpersonal skills are essential.
● Ability to engage positively with patients and families and collaborate with staff and providers.
● Proficiency in using a computer for documenting information in the electronic medical record.
