Job Summary

MedStar Health is seeking a Security Officer PRN to join our team. As a Security Officer PRN, you will be responsible for ensuring a safe environment for our patients, staff, and visitors. You will patrol hospital property, respond to calls for assistance, and report on conditions, objects, or persons that may impact the security and/or safety of patients, associates, physicians, visitors, or vendors.

Key Responsibilities
  • Contribute to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adhere to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards.
  • Immediately respond to emergencies to provide necessary assistance to employees and customers.
  • Conduct designated security patrols throughout the facility as directed. May be required to patrol the hospital campus/grounds via security motor vehicle or bicycle.
  • Monitor security and appearance of lobbies, waiting areas, elevators, and entrances.
  • Prepare and submit reports and logs of all incidents, investigations, and activities. Maintain department records, reports, and files as required.
  • Proficient in and utilize nonviolent crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques to ensure staff, patients, visitors, and all others remain safe, calm, and respected while onsite.
  • Provide assistance for way-finding, parking, deliveries, and other requested information for the hospital and MedStar affiliates.
  • Respond to security and medical code calls. Investigate incidents and accidents. Gather information and evidence. Notify appropriate authorities or superiors and call for back-up assistance as necessary.
  • Testify at legal proceedings, hearings, and trials.
  • Work cross-functionally to ensure safe and secure environments.
  • Conduct foot security patrols of hospital buildings and grounds, as required. Observe and monitor conditions, objects, or persons which might require police action. Control access to and inspect packages of those leaving buildings. Report all safety, security, and law violations.
  • Collect and secure patient valuables and lost-and-found articles.
  • Monitor camera surveillance system.
  • Respond to circumstances where the exercise of law enforcement authority may be required.
  • Interact with visitors and maintain designated security posts throughout the facility as directed.
  • Ensure quality outcomes for the security department by communicating with security staff and the public.
  • Participate in meetings and on committees and represent the department and hospital in community outreach efforts. Participate in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Associate's degree preferred.
  • 1-2 years related security or law enforcement experience required. In lieu of the related experience, an internal candidate who has 1 year of MedStar tenure may be considered.
  • Prior experience in healthcare preferred (or related field with a patient-first, customer-first mission) preferred.
  • One year of relevant professional-level work experience may be substituted for one year of required education.
Preferred Qualifications
  • DL NUMBER - Driver License, Valid and in State (DRLIC) Valid driver's license.
  • IAHSS- Certification As A Security Officer Basic Certified Healthcare Security Officer (CHSO) certification from IAHSS preferred.
  • CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required.
  • Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.
  • Must successfully complete all MedStar initial training related to violence prevention, de-escalation, and crisis prevention intervention required.
