We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Mental Health Technician to join our team at RWJBarnabas Health. As a key member of our multidisciplinary patient care team, you will provide essential support to patients who require special precautions, ensuring their safety and well-being at all times.
Key Responsibilities- Provide direct care to patients with diverse psychiatric illnesses, working under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse.
- Remain alert and observant to prevent injury or escape, engaging in therapeutic communication and activities to distract, occupy, and develop therapeutic rapport.
- Comply with hospital policies on confidentiality, infection control, and compassionate care, adhering to patient restrictions and managing aggressive, violent, and confused behavior.
- Accompany patients during transportation to departments for testing or procedures, maintaining a safe and clean environment.
- Provide companionship and conversation, stimulating activities, and monitoring patient activity at all times.
- Report vital signs out of normal range to the RN, checking patient identification and ensuring proper name and band security.
- Perform laboratory procedures as directed, including EKG, venipuncture, capillary sampling, glucose monitoring, and other procedures.
- Assist with patient hygiene, perinea care, and AOL activities, positioning patients to relieve pressure and preserve skin integrity.
- Recognize emergent or potential emergent situations and respond appropriately, reviewing and following patient care plans to ascertain patient goals.
- Document patient location, activity, behavior, thought content, and level of observation in the electronic record every 15 minutes.
- High school diploma or equivalency required.
- One (1) year of Nurse Aide/Assistant/CHHA/Emergency Medical Technician experience or satisfactory completion of an Aide training program.
- 3-5 years of related experience in a psychiatric or geriatric-psychiatric service setting required.
- Preferably at least one (1) year experience as a phlebotomist and/or EKG technician with a health care background.
- Must successfully complete MMC clinical training orientation.
- Annual BEST certification.
