Mental Health Technician

The Mental Health Technician plays a vital role in the multidisciplinary patient care team, providing key assistance to patients who require special precautions. This position is responsible for remaining with the assigned patient at all times during their assigned shift, except when relieved by staff for break and meal time.
Responsibilities- Provide therapeutic communication and activities to distract, occupy, and develop therapeutic rapport with patients.
- Remain alert and observant to prevent injury or escape, and engage in activities to promote patient safety.
- Accompany patients when transported to a department for testing or procedures.
- Monitor patient activity at all times and report any changes in physical, mental, emotional, behavioral, and social status to the Registered Nurse.
- Perform laboratory procedures as directed by the RN, including EKG, venipuncture, capillary sampling, glucose monitoring, and other laboratory procedures.
- Assist patients with patient hygiene, perinea care, and AOL activities.
- Position patients to relieve pressure and preserve skin integrity.
- Recognize emergent or potential emergent situations and respond appropriately.
- High school diploma or equivalency required.
- One (1) year of Nurse Aide/Assistant/CHHA/Emergency Medical Technician, or satisfactory completion of an Aide training program.
- 3-5 years of related experience in a psychiatric or geriatric-psychiatric service setting required.
- Preferably at least one (1) year experience as a phlebotomist and/or EKG technician with health care background.
- Must successfully complete MMC clinical training orientation.
- Annual BEST certification.
