Seattle, Washington, United States Blue Origin Full time

About Blue Origin:
At Blue Origin, we envision a future where millions of individuals thrive in space, contributing to the betterment of life on Earth. We are dedicated to creating safe, reusable, and cost-effective space vehicles and systems, all within a framework that prioritizes safety, teamwork, and inclusivity.

Role Overview:
This position is integral to Blue Origin Operations, which encompasses Integrated Supply Chain, Facilities, and Security. This includes comprehensive Manufacturing and Supply Chain support across all Blue Origin facilities.

Key Responsibilities:
As a vital member of a diverse team of specialists, technicians, and engineers, you will:

  • Collaborate closely with engineering design and company leadership to enhance all manufacturing initiatives and equipment associated with the construction of various spaceflight systems.
  • Oversee the manufacturing and assembly processes for launch vehicle modules, addressing and resolving non-conformances (NCs), and managing the delivery and commissioning of subsystems in alignment with program budgets and timelines.
  • Provide direct support to the production team in a dynamic environment by performing tasks such as:
    • Assisting on the manufacturing floor with assembly and installation, ensuring compliance with engineering specifications, resolving discrepancies, and conducting component acceptance testing.
    • Acting as a liaison between design, testing, operations, and manufacturing teams, facilitating effective communication and collaboration.
    • Leading troubleshooting efforts and resolving NC structural issues, particularly those related to tolerance stack-up, weld inspections, and the manufacturing of structural components.
    • Identifying and addressing the root causes of vehicle non-conformances through thorough Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and implementing corrective actions (RCCA).
    • Conducting DFMA & PFMEA analyses at various levels to enhance build sequences, manufacturing processes, and the feedback loop between design, production, and testing.
    • Support maintenance tasks for operational vehicles as necessary leading up to launches.
    • Provide technical expertise on structural subsystems in collaboration with other Manufacturing Engineers and Design Engineers.
    • Evaluate and contribute to the development of necessary artifacts during design and operational gated reviews.
    • Review vehicle designs for manufacturability, offering recommendations to enhance quality, streamline operations, and reduce costs.
    • Take ownership of product quality by establishing procedures and processes that foster continuous improvement.
    • Work with the system design team to ensure that process enhancements are implemented through Engineering Change Requests (ECR) to improve manufacturability and minimize NC occurrences.

Minimum Qualifications:
To be considered for this role, candidates should possess:

  • A Bachelor of Science degree or higher in mechanical, aerospace, industrial engineering, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, which may include internships or extracurricular activities.
  • A solid understanding of structural mechanics principles, including load path distribution and material strength, along with the ability to interpret finite element analysis (FEA).
  • Familiarity with common Non-Destructive Testing methods.
  • Strong project management skills and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks effectively.
  • Experience with manufacturing processes, work order management, BOM structures, and quality control.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software and the ability to interpret engineering drawings.
  • A commitment to hands-on work, both independently and as part of a team, throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Excellent attention to detail and a strong sense of ownership over tasks.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to engage effectively at all organizational levels.
  • Ability to build trust and maintain positive relationships within a diverse team environment.
  • U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residency is required.

Preferred Qualifications:
Additional qualifications that would be advantageous include:

  • A Master’s degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering or a related field.
  • Over 10 years of engineering experience with various materials and manufacturing techniques.
  • Experience with Lean Manufacturing and/or Six Sigma methodologies.
  • Proficiency in advanced 3D CAD programs.
  • Knowledge of GD&T and welding standards.

Benefits:
We offer a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, life insurance, paid parental leave, disability coverage, a 401(k) plan with company matching, and an Education Support Program. Employees are also entitled to paid time off and discretionary bonuses based on individual contributions.
