SENIOR METALLURGICAL SPECIALIST, SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT (STARSHIP)

This role is integral to our Starship initiative and demands a blend of exceptional leadership and technical expertise.

This highly specialized position necessitates hands-on experience in process engineering and the development of new products through to stable production for the machined components and assemblies utilized in rockets and rocket engines.

The ideal candidate will possess a comprehensive understanding of the machining and assembly of metallic components, along with a willingness to tackle new challenges in unfamiliar domains to support our mission to Mars.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Spearhead innovative material development at mills for proprietary SpaceX materials.

2. Implement stringent requirements at mills globally to guarantee the procurement of aerospace-grade materials for the Starship program.


3. Serve as the metallurgical liaison for all acquired metallic raw materials and semi-finished products, including coil products, sheet metal, stainless steels, mill products, castings, forgings, and tubing, addressing emergent supplier challenges and mitigating risks to the project by resolving significant manufacturing and quality issues.


4. Lead the resolution of technical quality issues and non-conformance, acting as a bridge between purchasing, engineering, manufacturing, and suppliers.

5. Collaborate with procurement to identify and qualify exceptional suppliers based on quality and their ability to meet our demanding takt times.

6. Partner with suppliers to enhance their capabilities in producing products unique to SpaceX, often expanding their offerings into new materials and processes.

7. Develop and validate process controls to manage critical characteristics.

8. Conduct design for manufacturing (DFM) assessments to ensure parts are manufacturable at early stages, ideally before sourcing.

9. Oversee the new product introduction (NPI) process at suppliers for new components, drawing modifications, or when transitioning existing parts to a new supplier.

10. Propose technical product enhancements to minimize risks to quality and delivery, and reduce potential defect opportunities.

11. Evaluate and review supplier manufacturing processes and quality systems.

12. Provide constructive feedback on manufacturing methods and technologies.

13. Manage supplier improvement initiatives.

14. Enhance supplier quality performance through workshops at supplier locations, offering technical support in developing a robust quality system as needed.

15. Exhibit innovation, technical proficiency, meticulous attention to detail, self-motivation, and courage.

16. Drive results and ensure customer satisfaction.

17. Collaborate with teams, lead projects, and continuously strive for improvement within the supply chain.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in an engineering or materials discipline.
- 5+ years of experience in manufacturing, materials, or process engineering.

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Master's degree in metallurgical engineering or materials science & engineering.
- 2+ years of experience with TIG, MIG, and resistance welding of stainless steel.
- Familiarity with metallic mill products in the alloys and product forms relevant to our launch vehicles and engines, primarily stainless steels.
- Experience with coil products, tubing, castings, and/or forgings.
- Broad knowledge of ancillary processes associated with the production of metallic parts, such as NDE and heat treatment.
- Technical expertise including understanding of 2D blueprints and model drawings.
- Knowledge of supplier quality processes, including Production Part Approval Process, Advanced Product Quality Planning, and First Article Inspection Reports.
- Proficiency in statistical techniques and methods such as design of experiments and Six Sigma.
- Experience with Quality Systems (ISO 9000/TS/AS9100/NADCAP).
- A disciplined approach to problem-solving, including 8D methodology.
- Proficient in MS Office applications and report writing.
- Familiarity with lean concepts.
- Strong communication skills, capable of influencing others and making presentations to team members and management.
- Experience with MRP or ERP systems.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Willingness to work extended hours, including nights and weekends as necessary to meet critical milestones.
- Ability to travel up to 50% of the work week, including international travel.
- This position requires onsite presence; remote work is not an option.
- A valid driver's license is required.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Pay Range:
Supply Chain Engineer/Senior:
$125,000 - $175,000.00 per year.


Your actual level and base salary will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on job-related knowledge, skills, education, and experience.

Base salary is just one component of your total rewards package at SpaceX.

You may also be eligible for long-term incentives, including company stock, stock options, or long-term cash awards, as well as potential discretionary bonuses and the opportunity to purchase additional stock at a discount through an Employee Stock Purchase Plan.

Employees accrue 3 weeks of paid vacation and are eligible for 10 or more paid holidays annually.
