Job Summary

Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Field Technician to join our Underground Utilities, Land Surveying, and Mapping team in Pittsburgh. As a Field Technician, you will play a critical role in conducting field investigations, operating equipment to locate subsurface utilities, and labeling topographic features from field codes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct field investigations to identify and locate subsurface utilities
  • Operate equipment such as digital pipe & cable instruments, vacuum excavation trucks, and ground-penetrating radar to locate subsurface utilities
  • Label topographic features from field codes to ensure accurate mapping
  • Perform calculations to determine the location and depth of subsurface utilities
  • Mark underground utilities to ensure safe excavation and construction practices
  • Operate vacuum excavation trucks to expose underground utilities
  • Interpret roadway and utility plans, and utility record drawings to ensure accurate mapping and location of subsurface utilities
  • Travel to various job sites to conduct field investigations and operate equipment
Requirements
  • Valid Driver's License with a good driving record
  • Able to pass Security Background Checks
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Able to work 7:00 am - 4:00 pm Monday - Friday (Minimum)
  • Travel required
  • Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Able to bend, kneel, lift, and carry up to 75 lbs as needed
Preferred Qualifications
  • 0 to 4 years of related experience
  • Experience in the location of underground utilities preferred but not necessary
  • Experience using GPR is preferred but not necessary
  • Surveying experience preferred but not necessary
Working Conditions

Work is performed in the field 95% of the time. Ability to extensively perform bending, kneeling, standing, shoveling, and lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 75 lbs. as needed. Work may be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions.

Work is performed within a general office environment 5% of the time. Office work is generally sedentary in nature but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment.
