Position Overview

The Campus Safety Officer plays a crucial role in ensuring the security and safety of the university community. This position involves delivering law enforcement and protective services, responding to emergencies, and addressing various needs of faculty, staff, students, and visitors.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Patrol Duties: Regularly patrol designated areas of the campus by foot, vehicle, or bicycle. Respond to emergencies including medical, fire, and criminal incidents in accordance with established protocols. (35%)
  2. Investigation: Investigate suspicious activities and enforce applicable laws and university policies. Conduct initial inquiries, interviews, and evidence collection. (25%)
  3. Documentation: Prepare comprehensive reports for incidents, arrests, and daily activities. Provide testimony in legal proceedings as necessary. (13%)
  4. Property Security: Ensure the safety of university facilities by managing access, identifying hazards, and responding to security alarms. (13%)
  5. Event Security: Provide security services for university events and perform additional duties as assigned. (10%)
Additional Responsibilities
  1. Maintain departmental equipment and ensure it is in good working condition. (2%)
  2. Offer general assistance and information to the university community. (2%)
Contact and Collaboration

Frequent interaction with departmental staff, university faculty, and students is essential. The officer will also engage with external agencies, including local law enforcement and emergency services.

Supervisory Role

This position does not include direct supervision of staff but may involve providing guidance to security personnel and student assistants.

Qualifications

Experience: Preferred experience in customer relations and community engagement, particularly in a campus environment.

Education/Certification: A high school diploma or equivalent is required, with a bachelor's degree preferred. Candidates must successfully complete the necessary certification exams and maintain required licenses.

  1. Ability to meet the physical and academic standards of law enforcement training.
  2. Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, with a diverse population.
  3. Strong decision-making abilities in emergency situations.
  4. Knowledge of laws, regulations, and university policies.

Working Conditions

This role may require extended periods of physical activity and exposure to various weather conditions. Flexibility in working hours may be necessary based on situational demands.
