Position Overview

The Healthcare Support Specialist functions as an aide to the Certified School Nurse, assisting educational staff and administration in executing medical protocols tailored to the specific needs of students. This role is pivotal in fostering positive relationships among administrators, students, parents, and staff.

Key Responsibilities

  • Adhere to established procedures and practices aligned with contemporary nursing strategies for assessment and intervention, promoting a healthy and supportive environment within the educational setting.
  • Provide health room supervision under the direction of the Principal and Certified School Nurse.
  • Communicate pertinent health information regarding students to Teachers and Administration.
  • Act as a liaison among medical professionals, parents, and school personnel to address the needs of students who are ill or injured.
  • Assist in conducting health screenings in accordance with state regulations and guidelines.
  • Be prepared to deliver emergency care to students or staff in the event of illness or injury.
  • Notify the Principal and Certified School Nurse regarding any state law or local policy requirements concerning the exclusion or readmission of students with infectious diseases.
  • Administer medications and provide first aid, along with other necessary health care services within the school environment.
  • Support school staff in maintaining sanitary conditions and health standards.
  • Keep accurate and comprehensive student health records as mandated by district policies.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned by the building principal.

Qualifications

A High School Diploma is required, along with educational credentials mandated by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing for Practical Nurse Licensure. A minimum of two years of experience in a related field is preferred.

Certifications and Licenses

  • Current Pennsylvania License as a Licensed Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse is mandatory.
  • Current First Aid and CPR/AED certifications are required.
  • Clearances and certifications as per Act 34/151/114/126/168 are necessary.

Essential Skills and Abilities

Knowledge and Skills

Critical thinking and problem-solving skills are essential, particularly in relation to human development. Familiarity with medical emergencies and the ability to respond appropriately in crisis situations is crucial. Proficiency in organizing, managing, and communicating electronically is required, along with knowledge of current office technology.

Academic and Language Skills

Knowledge of medications, first aid, and basic health care procedures is important. The ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written forms is necessary, including a strong understanding of the English language.

Mathematical and Technological Skills

Competence in arithmetic applications and the ability to analyze and interpret data are required. Familiarity with current computer software, including word processing and database management, is essential.

Reasoning and Interpersonal Skills

The ability to problem-solve, multitask, and utilize resources efficiently is important. Maintaining effective relationships with students, parents, staff, and the community while upholding confidentiality and compliance with regulations is essential.

Physical Requirements
