Director of Sustainability and Energy Management

City Colleges of Chicago is seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to lead our sustainability and energy management efforts. As the Director of Sustainability and Energy Management, you will play a critical role in developing and implementing strategies to achieve our district's sustainability and energy efficiency goals.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and Implement Sustainability Strategies: Collaborate with key stakeholders to identify opportunities and develop strategies and programs for sustainability initiatives.
  • Research and Apply Best Practices: Stay up-to-date on the latest sustainability and energy management trends, and apply this knowledge to support the district's sustainability goals.
  • Manage Utility Contracts: Conduct in-depth analysis of utility usage and energy consumption levels, and make recommendations for negotiating contract agreements on utility rates.
  • Lead Utility Curtailment Programs: Review program guidelines and identify opportunities to maximize potential utility rebates.
  • Secure External Funding: Research potential grants and other funding sources, and identify opportunities for external funding for sustainable initiatives and energy incentives.
  • Manage Environmental Consulting Services: Oversee district-wide contracts for environmental consulting services, including water testing, asbestos abatement, and chemical disposal.
  • Project Manage Capital Improvements: Lead capital improvement projects relating to retro-commissioning of HVAC systems and equipment, increasing energy efficiency of buildings.
  • Provide Sustainability Expertise: Offer expertise on sustainability and energy efficiency resources to project managers responsible for new construction, commissioning, and retro-commissioning of facilities, systems, and equipment.
  • Collaborate with Chief Engineers: Work with Chief Engineers to reduce energy usage, including the use of building automation systems, occupancy sensors, variable speed controls, and other energy use tools.
  • Promote Sustainable Practices: Promote sustainable practices across campuses, including recycling, bicycling, waste reduction, and energy monitoring.
  • Track Sustainability Initiatives: Maintain records and prepare various management reports on sustainability initiatives, status of energy efficiency/conservation programs, recycling and waste reduction, and related sustainability and environmental issues.
Requirements:
  • Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Environmental Management, Sustainability, Urban Planning, or a related field, supplemented by at least four years of relevant experience.
  • Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree.
  • Desirable Experience: Work experience with sustainability and energy management programs in a higher education institution setting.
  • Sustainability Knowledge: Knowledge of sustainability issues and best practices, and a commitment to institutional and societal sustainability.
  • Facilities Management: Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the facilities management and operations within institutions of higher education.
  • Building Commissioning: Knowledge and experience in building commissioning and re-commissioning process.
  • Project Management: Project management skills and proven ability to manage re-commissioning projects of varying size and complexity.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills.
  • Collaboration: Ability to work collaboratively with staff, contractors, faculty, students, and other internal and external stakeholders to build partnerships.
  • Travel: Ability to travel across the district to campuses and satellite sites.
  • Flexibility: Ability and willingness to work weekends and evenings as required.
  • Technical Skills: Advanced proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
