Ophthalmic Care Specialist

About the Role:
The Ophthalmic Care Specialist will work collaboratively with the Surgical Service to provide administrative and clinical care duties related to Veteran patients with various eye diseases and conditions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform refractometry (refraction) utilizing autorefraction and manual phoropter to determine spectacle prescription.
- Measure visual acuity and refraction.
- Conduct kinetic visual field testing (Humphrey or Goldmann).
- Measure intraocular pressure using applanation tonometry, icare, and other current methods.
- Evaluate pupils, recording size, shape, symmetry, reaction to light, and accommodation, as well as any abnormalities.
- Perform base slit lamp biomicroscopy evaluation to check for abnormalities prior to dilation.
- May perform advanced color vision testing of the entire visual spectrum to detect complex color vision defects.
- Measure eyeglass prescriptions using manual or automated lensometer, recording sphere, cylinder, axis, and prism in both plus and minus cylinder.
- Perform A-scan ultrasonography, including intra-ocular lens calculations, using immersion A-scan on eyes with complex pathology.
- Determine corneal curvature using manual keratometry or automated topography.
- Perform slit lamp photography.
- May perform anterior segment OCT, confocal microscopy, electroretinography, electrooculography, and visual evoked potential.
- Perform fluorescein or indocyanine green (ICG) angiography, with diagnostic photography of retinal vessels and fundus photography.
- Perform thorough preparatory cleaning of critical reusable medical equipment used in surgical procedures.
- Assist in minor clinical surgical procedures, including laser surgery and intravitreal injections.
Requirements:
- Must be certified as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) with the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO).
- Must demonstrate good interpersonal skills.
- Must demonstrate knowledge of personal computer operation, computerized data entry, storage, and recall, as well as college data and patient records maintenance.
- Should have experience working with an interdisciplinary team comprised of highly educated professionals and front-line staff.
