Position Summary

Under the guidance of a registered nurse, this role provides essential support in labor and delivery by performing routine patient care tasks and assisting with surgical procedures.

Education

High school diploma required.

Skills

Successful completion of a Surgical Technician program is essential.

Experience

Prior experience in a labor and delivery setting is preferred but not mandatory.

Certification/License

Surgical Technician Certification is required.

Essential Functions
  • Provide basic patient care procedures as delegated by the supervising registered nurse.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in aseptic technique for all procedures.
  • Possess comprehensive knowledge of equipment and supplies used in labor and delivery procedures.
  • Scrub and assist surgeons during operative procedures within the Labor & Delivery Room (LDRP).
  • Anticipate surgeon needs regarding instruments, sutures, sponges, and supplies. Maintain accurate counts throughout procedures. Assist with specimen handling according to established protocols. Contribute to patient positioning, application of dressings, and table equipment setup.
  • Maintain a sterile environment by adhering to traffic control protocols, preventing contamination, and ensuring the cleanliness of operating room tables. Manage anesthesia carts, machines, and epidural cart supplies effectively.
  • Serve as a resource for other staff members within the LDRP, fostering a collaborative and supportive work environment.
  • Actively participate in departmental activities and committees to contribute to continuous improvement.
  • Demonstrate adaptability and responsiveness to the evolving needs of the labor and delivery unit.
  • Transport patients to and from other hospital departments as required.
  • Advocate for patient rights and well-being, ensuring their comfort and safety.
  • Maintain a clean and safe environment for both patients and staff.
  • Uphold strict confidentiality regarding patient and employee information.
  • Practice fiscal responsibility by carefully managing supplies and equipment inventory.
  • Adhere to all hospital policies, including fire safety regulations, infection control standards, smoking restrictions, telephone usage, and other workplace conduct guidelines.
  • Attend mandatory education seminars and participate in relevant inservice training programs to enhance skills and knowledge related to LDRP procedures.
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by management.
