The Lifeguard at Penobscot Bay YMCA is responsible for fostering a secure and inviting environment that respects all individuals while ensuring safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and adjacent areas in line with YMCA policies and protocols.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Maintain vigilant observation of the pool area.
  2. Understand and review all emergency protocols, responding to crises promptly in accordance with YMCA policies, and completing necessary reports.
  3. Address challenges with potential solutions in a timely manner.
  4. Consistently apply safety regulations, policies, and guidelines for the aquatic environment.
  5. Stay composed and objective under pressure or when faced with challenges.
  6. Keep accurate records as mandated by the YMCA and/or state health department regulations.
  7. Conduct equipment inspections and ensure the availability of necessary gear.
  8. Assess the pool for hazardous conditions upon arrival.
  9. Perform chemical testing when not actively guarding, as required, and take appropriate actions.
  10. Attend all required In-Service training sessions.
  11. Carry out additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum age of 16
  • Certifications: Basic life support or professional rescuer CPR/AED/First Aid
  • Current YMCA Lifeguard certification or equivalent

  • Ability to maintain physical and mental readiness at certification level
  • Must demonstrate lifeguard skills per YMCA standards
