Sentara Health is seeking a Safety and Security Specialist for Sentara Port Warwick in Newport News, VA. This is a Full-Time position with a rotating schedule.

Position Summary:
  • The Safety and Security Specialist ensures a physically safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, and staff.
  • This role involves active patrolling of the premises and monitoring activities in and around facilities, responding appropriately to both routine and emergency situations.
  • The Specialist conducts surveillance via cameras, maintains departmental logs and records, utilizes computer skills for documentation of daily operations, performs security investigations, assesses situations, and takes necessary actions for professional and timely resolution.
Working Hours:
  • Monday through Friday, the security personnel operate in three shifts: 7am - 3:30pm, 3pm - 11:30pm, and 11pm - 7:30am.
  • During weekends, there may be 12-hour and 4-hour shifts.
  • New hires are expected to be flexible with their start times and to transition to a regular schedule.
  • Schedules are organized to align with the two-week pay period, with most Specialists working part of their 40 hours on alternate weekends.
Qualifications:
  • Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Licensure: Valid Driver's License with an acceptable driving record
  • Experience: Minimum of one year in a security role; experience in military, law enforcement, or as a security officer is preferred; completion of de-escalation and Physical Intervention training within 180 days of hire. Certified Healthcare Security Officer (CHSO) certification by the International Association for Healthcare Security & Safety (IAHSS) must be obtained within 90 days of hire.
To enhance safety and security for our patients and team members, Sentara has instituted a Fit for Duty assessment to ensure that our officers meet a minimum standard of fitness.
  • The four-part assessment includes a response walk, a stair climb, a drag to safety, and a lift.
  • All prospective candidates for the security officer position must successfully complete the FFD assessment, which will be administered by the respective hiring/security leader & Employee Health prior to receiving an offer.
