Job Overview
The City of Appleton is in search of a Library Materials Assistant for a Regular Part-Time role. This non-exempt position entails the management and preparation of library resources for circulation. The position requires a commitment of 20 hours per week, with evening and weekend availability necessary. Supervision will be provided by a section assistant supervisor and the section supervisor.
Key Responsibilities
PRIMARY DUTIES
• Process library materials from the exception bin, checking for missing pieces and damages.
• Organize various formats of library resources from sorting bins onto carts.
• Route and mail materials to the respective libraries.
• Generate patron information for reserved items.
• Address phone inquiries regarding materials in the sorting area.
• Reshelve returned or utilized materials in an orderly manner.
• Maintain neat and organized arrangements of library resources.
• Prepare newspapers and periodicals for display and circulation.
• Handle the processing of new books.
• Troubleshoot and manage issues related to the automated materials handling conveyor system and RFID technology.
• Ensure regular attendance and punctuality, including overtime and additional hours as required.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
• Perform extra tasks such as creating labels and end signs.
• Participate in special projects, often collaborating with other library sections.
• Provide assistance to patrons or refer them to the public service desk.
• Tag materials with RFID tags and resolve any tagging issues.
• Assist in processing books within technical services.
Qualifications
A high school diploma or an equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:
• Familiarity with the Dewey decimal system.
• Strong organizational skills.
• Ability to sort materials alphabetically and numerically with speed and accuracy.
• Understanding of general library services and practices.
• Excellent communication skills, both tactful and courteous.
• Capability to work effectively as part of a team and maintain positive relationships with colleagues.
• Proficiency in computer skills, including basic troubleshooting, keyboarding, and use of Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher, and Outlook.
• Ability to learn the library's circulation software.
• Capacity to work in a fast-paced, dynamic, and sometimes noisy environment.
• Competence in following oral and written instructions effectively.
• Physical ability to reach shelving heights from three inches to 75 inches, lift up to 30 pounds, and maneuver heavy bins and loaded book carts.
• Ability to stand, bend, reach, or walk for the majority of the work shift.
• Adaptability to changing procedures and work environments.
• Ability to work independently when required.
