Schedule: No Evenings, No Weekends, and Paid Training

Under the general supervision of the Site Coordinator/Director, the Site Assistant plays a crucial role in leading activities on-site, directly engaging with children. Staff members are expected to be qualified through training and experience to effectively manage the administration, operation, and upkeep of the school-age child care program. This position is vital in ensuring that the child care services reflect the mission, purpose, image, and core values of the Young Men's Christian Association of Rochester.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in planning daily activities, preparing materials, and implementing the curriculum.
  • Lead activities, including engaging with individual children and small groups at the site.
  • Ensure a safe environment for all children participating in the program.
  • Help with the preparation and distribution of snacks.
  • Support the Site Coordinator/Site Supervisor/Wrap Teacher in maintaining records and preparing reports.
  • Know and apply emergency procedures, rules, and regulations as necessary.
  • Exhibit a positive attitude that fosters good public relations.
  • Help maintain positive relationships with school administration.
  • Assist in recruiting program participants.
  • Attend relevant Before and After School Program training and meetings.
  • Follow the directions of the Site Coordinator/Site Supervisor/Wrap Teacher as needed.
  • May be required to relocate to another site upon request by the Director/Multi-Site Coordinator/Site Coordinator.
  • Understand and implement NYS OCFS Regulations.
  • Maintain all necessary certifications.
  • Attend all mandatory meetings and training sessions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Must be at least 16 years of age; a high school diploma or GED is preferred.
  • One year of experience working with children under 13 years of age, preferably in an organized environment.
  • Bring maturity, responsibility, and a genuine interest in working with people.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills are essential.
  • General knowledge and understanding of the YMCA, its goals, and its mission.
  • Familiarity with various resources for programming ideas and the ability to utilize that information in daily activities.
  • Knowledge of age-appropriate activities and expectations for children ages 5-12.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to move quickly to address safety issues in the setting (e.g., climbing, aggressive behavior).
  • Remain calm, objective, and respectful in potentially stressful situations (e.g., dealing with an upset child, parent, or staff).
  • Ability to navigate the room to assist children and supervise daily activities, social interactions, and emotional needs.
  • Ability to lift young children and objects (e.g., food baskets and supplies) up to 40 lbs.
  • Ability to work in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to move between program sites and enter all YMCA environments, including program spaces, buses, schools, pools, and activity areas.
