The Peer Mentor for Project S.T.A.G.E. (Students Transitioning to Academics and Gainful Employment) will provide academic and social support to students with disabilities from diverse backgrounds. The successful candidate will guide and support students in areas such as time management, wellness, and academic success, helping them navigate the college environment with confidence.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide individualized guidance and ongoing feedback to assigned mentees.
- Facilitate individual mentoring sessions with students, focusing on topics such as adjusting to the college environment, time management and study skills, and safety and health and wellness.
- Cultivate and maintain an environment that is conducive to student learning and development.
- Participate in preliminary and ongoing trainings and team meetings.
- Communicate training needs and/or student concerns to the Dean's Office and appropriate Project STAGE staff.
Requirements:
- Enrollment as a full or part-time student at Indian River State College (IRSC) in good academic standing and good student conduct standing after completing at least one (1) semester.
- Pursuing a degree in the education or health and human services disciplines, preferred.
- Ability to convey academic skills, social skills, and life skills in a practical and comprehensive manner.
- Ability to work independently as well as with others.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills and ease in relating to people with disabilities and diverse backgrounds.
Physical Demands:
The physical requirements for this position include:
- Ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to safely lift, hold, and carry up to 50 pounds of supplies and/or equipment needed for student training.
