Key Responsibilities:

Essential Skills:

  • Proven expertise in hands-on installation support for new or modified production machinery, including troubleshooting and process initiation of mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Demonstrated experience in project management tasks such as evaluating and enhancing equipment installation practices for improved efficiency, sourcing and expediting components and materials, and ensuring that redline drawings, schedules, and checklists are current.
  • Capability to oversee both internal and external technicians, as well as maintenance and contract trades throughout all phases of equipment installation and modification, including demolition, construction, installation, testing, and debugging of production systems.

Required Software Proficiency:

AutoCAD, MS Office Suite

Position Purpose:

  • Provide hands-on installation assistance for new or modified production systems.
  • Direct and guide contract engineering technicians, internal maintenance teams, and external trades during all phases of equipment installation and modification.
  • Conduct hands-on troubleshooting, process initiation, design, and documentation of Electrical and Controls Systems for new or modified production equipment.
  • Update existing documentation to finalize drawing packages, installation checklists, machine part lists, illustrations, and specifications for production equipment.
  • Adjust machine control programs for new or existing process equipment, including but not limited to pick-and-place systems, servo-driven manipulators, robotics, automated part traffic flow, valve control of process gases and fluids, PLC-controlled I/O, and machine communication networks.
  • Evaluate the condition and usability of existing equipment to ensure compatibility with new installation plans.

Major Duties:

  • Carry out initial equipment setup and debugging until turnover to operations.
  • Provide advanced troubleshooting support, guiding contract engineering technicians and trades as necessary to replace faulty components and implement design changes to resolve equipment/process challenges.
  • Source and expedite materials for new or modified equipment.
  • Develop electrical installation checklists and schedules, overseeing their application as appropriate.
  • Prepare work orders and direct maintenance personnel and/or external trades in the fabrication, assembly, testing, and installation of equipment.
  • Review and revise installation documentation and drawings as necessary.
  • Modify software programs utilized for process equipment control.
  • Understand the setup and use of machine controls for digital and analog I/O.
  • Update existing schematics and coordinate with drafting services or oversee draftsmen as needed to resolve design issues.
  • Provide training to contract engineering technicians, internal maintenance staff, and external trades on new equipment installation procedures as necessary for successful execution of installation tasks.
  • Redesign electrical components to lower installation costs, address equipment interferences, and rectify inadequate designs.
  • Analyze and improve equipment installation practices to enhance efficiency, particularly aimed at optimizing installation schedules.

Desired Qualifications:

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (4-year degree required; degrees other than BSEE may be considered if relevant work experience aligns with the job description).

Experience:

At least 5 years of experience in a related field.

Unique Requirements:

  • Majority of time will be spent on the production floor working on equipment.
  • Strong practical hands-on aptitude.
  • Proficient in electro-mechanical troubleshooting with a solid understanding of electrical schematics.
  • Knowledge of motion control systems: servo, stepper, DC, AC drives.
  • Understanding of process variables: flow, temperature, rate, pressure, level.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of current loops.
  • Familiarity with serial communication protocols: RS232 / 485, Ethernet, IEEE-488.
  • Knowledge of machine control systems and classical control theory.

Preferred Equipment or Software Experience:

  • Proficient in Windows, MS Office Suite including PowerPoint, Excel, Word, AutoCAD 2023, AutoCAD Electrical 2023, MS Project, PLC and PC-based systems, Allen-Bradley PLC, Beckhoff PLC / Motion Control, B-R Control, Fanuc Robotics, C++, Visual Basic, IFix, and experience with automated equipment systems.

Equipment Familiarization:

  • Experience with Fluke Meters, Oscilloscopes, and other electronic testing equipment.
  • Familiarity with Programmable Controllers.
  • Knowledge of equipment used for machine installation activities: man lifts, hand tools, etc.

  • The team is based in Wilmington, NC, and this posting is for a project initially based in Wilmington.
  • Contractors who excel and express interest in continuing beyond the initial project may be considered for additional assignments.
  • Future travel requirements will vary based on project locations.
