Press Operator

Job Title: Press Operator Job Summary: We are seeking a skilled Press Operator to join our team at TSG - The Sheridan Group. As a Press Operator, you will be responsible for printing and folding signatures that meet specifications on work orders to create bindery-ready bundles for books that meet or exceed our customers' expectations. Key Responsibilities: * Read and understand work orders to verify correct substrate, bind type, ink color, and run lengths. * Learn to interpret the information on work orders and their contents. * Follow daily running orders provided by the Scheduling Team. * Communicate with the Supervisor and Scheduling Team as needed. * Set up machines and perform quality printing and folding of text and halftone work. * Maintain high throughput by performing quick and efficient make-readies, job changeovers, and folder changeovers. * Inspect for quality defects to ensure quality standards are achieved. * Maintain accurate data collections. * Understand substrate weights, PPI, size, grain direction, coating, marking, and storage. * Oversee all segments of press operation. * Ensure bundles conform to bindery needs, including proper identification. * Dispose of waste properly, including printed and blank substrate, inks, and fountain solution. * Perform preventative maintenance, general cleaning, and upkeep of machines and auxiliary equipment. * Provide training to Assistants in machine operation and safety. * Troubleshoot and perform minor repairs to machines and auxiliary equipment. * Assist maintenance personnel with machine repair. * Exercise initiative, ask questions, and look for ways to improve productivity. * Keep the area safe and clean. * Adequately communicate with oncoming shifts. * Perform end-of-shift duties, leaving the area ready for oncoming shifts. Requirements: * High school diploma or general education degree (GED) or one to three months related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education or experience. * One year of printing experience. * Ability to read and comprehend instructions. * Ability to read and interpret documents such as work orders, workplace and safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. * Basic math skills, add, subtract, and ability to use a measuring device. * Basic problem-solving skills. Preferred Skills and Abilities: * Ability to work with various software packages, including Microsoft Office and Excel. * Effective email and electronic communication skills. * Ability to work with the following tools or machinery: pallet jack, paper turning disc, knives, pallet wrap holder, vacuum lift, plate bender, plate carts, hand tools, grease guns/air hose nozzles, shaft handling cart. Physical Requirements: * Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. frequently and 20 lbs. constantly. * Constantly be able to work in the work activities, moving to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another, communicating with others to exchange information, operating machines and/or power tools, working in noisy environments. * Occasionally be able to do the listed activities, ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like, moving self in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments, including tight spaces, remaining in stationary positions, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods, adjusting or moving objects up to 50 lbs. in all directions, repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands, and/or fingers, assessing the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned, working in high temperatures, small and/or enclosed spaces.
