Brooklyn, New York, United States Red Hook Initiative Full time
Job Description

RHIF is a community-based nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of Red Hook residents. We are seeking an Urban Farm Operations Manager to join our team.

About Us

We operate two urban farm sites in Red Hook, Brooklyn, and provide opportunities for teens to develop their knowledge base, leadership skills, and engagement with their community and environment.

Our programs include a teen farm apprenticeship, weekly farm stands, farm share programs, a school workshop program, and a Garden Club for NYCHA residents. Since 2001, we have strived to improve access to healthy, affordable produce, while nurturing a new generation of green leaders.

About the Role

The Urban Farm Operations Manager will be responsible for leading operations at our two farm sites. This includes developing seasonal crop plans, managing weekly produce distributions, hosting volunteer sessions, ensuring overall site maintenance, and supporting public programs on the farms.

The manager will also lead adult volunteers and supervise high school-aged farm apprentices as they engage in various farm tasks. Emails, data entry, and related office work will also be required on a weekly basis.

Responsibilities
  • Liaise with Assistant Farm Director to develop weekly work plan;
  • Develop crop plan including seeding/planting/harvesting schedules;
  • Meet production goals to supply produce for weekly distributions: farm stands, FoodRx, and CSA;
  • Organize harvest, set up/breakdown, and staffing for weekly farm stands, on and off site;
  • Serve as mentor and supervisor to teen farm apprentices during regular work sessions;
  • Supervise 3-5 seasonal staff and/or interns; including regular check-ins for feedback and planning;
  • Manage Garden Club activities including signing up members, running Orientations, being present for weekly independent work times, answering questions ad hoc, planning seedlings, planning and leading educational workshops, and organizing seasonal gatherings;
  • Participate in outreach activities to promote programming, including regular attendance at Red Hook Houses Tenant Association meetings as well as other local meetings;
  • Coordinate with Farm Education Coordinators to plan meaningful tasks and projects for youth farmers to complete during work sessions;
Requirements

The ideal candidate will have 2-3 years of experience in intensive, small-scale, high-yield vegetable production. They should have demonstrated experience working with both youth and adults, expertise in organic vegetable growing methods, soil and compost management best practices, and experience in the safe operation and maintenance of farm tools and machinery.

The candidate should also be able to follow an annual crop plan and maintain farm records, have exposure to anti-oppression trainings and inquiry-based education, experience in the operation of farm stands or markets, proficiency in spoken Spanish and/or Mandarin preferred, and familiarity with the Red Hook community as well as NYC urban agriculture community.

$55,000 annually, plus comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, and vision coverage, employee assistance program (EAP), 403b retirement plan, flexible spending accounts for out-of-pocket health, dependent and commuter expenses, life insurance, and 24 PTO days.
