Position Overview
The LPN-Resident role is designed for individuals who are committed to professional growth in nursing. This position entails attending essential quality and core curriculum classes, engaging in professional development workshops, and participating in peer support groups. The successful candidate will complete all clinical competencies and validation requirements of the Nurse Residency Program while working under the guidance of the Clinical Education Team. This role involves actively managing clinical situations under the direct supervision of a licensed Registered Nurse, who oversees all clinical experiences, documentation, and procedures.

All team members are expected to uphold Prisma Health's standards of compassion, dignity, excellence, integrity, and teamwork.

Compliance with organizational policies and procedures is mandatory, including but not limited to: licensure renewal, required training, employee health screenings, attendance policies, dress code, patient confidentiality, infection control, and medication administration.

This program is tailored for new graduates or LPNs with less than one year of nursing experience. Prisma Health is dedicated to equipping new nursing professionals with a robust foundation for their careers. The nurse residency program integrates foundational and specialty-specific clinical core curriculum, quality classes, simulation, one-on-one skills validation, hands-on application with clinical mentors, and professional development.

Key Responsibilities
  • Data Collection: Gather patient information and complete necessary documentation according to unit standards; identify patient needs and communicate with the RN; review and record the latest diagnostic results; provide patient care under the direct supervision of the licensed RN. 20%
  • Care Planning: Collaborate with the interdisciplinary care team to contribute to the care plan based on nursing processes and incorporate plans from other disciplines; refer to multidisciplinary support services under the direct supervision of the licensed RN. 20%
  • Care Implementation: Deliver care that adheres to accepted practice standards; perform treatments and procedures as prescribed and according to patient care standards; demonstrate understanding of age-related characteristics and needs of patients; explain nursing procedures; provide discharge education; identify emergency situations and escalate to the RN; advocate for patient care with other healthcare personnel and evaluate instituted patient care measures; respect patient rights and utilize established mechanisms for managing ethical issues in patient care under the direct supervision of the licensed RN. 20%
  • Evaluation: Document patient care delivered as planned and any deviations, with appropriate rationale; make and record observations related to potential problems; implement nursing measures related to potential issues under the direct supervision of the licensed RN. 20%
  • Leadership: Incorporate cost-effective measures into nursing practice; recognize unit challenges and escalate to the RN; actively participate in quality improvement processes; comply with hospital expectations to meet staffing needs based on patient care requirements; adhere to policies ensuring safe working conditions; monitor unsafe conditions; identify ineffective patient care management, resolve issues, and complete necessary reports; fulfill call responsibilities for the unit as assigned and adjust staffing based on volume and acuity under the direct supervision of the licensed RN. 20%
Supervisory Responsibilities
This is a non-management position reporting to a supervisor, manager, director, or executive.

Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a LPN program recognized by the SC State Board of Nursing.

Candidates with more than 12 months of LPN experience are not eligible for this program.

Required Certifications
Licensed to practice as a LPN in South Carolina.

Alternative Qualifications
In lieu of completion of a LPN program, equivalent programs recognized by the SC State Board of Nursing will be accepted.
