Job Summary:

As a Surgical Technician with the Cherokee Nation, you will play a vital role in providing support for surgical operations, ranging from minor procedures to complex and extensive surgeries. Your expertise will ensure the highest level of patient care and safety.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide surgical scrub technician support for surgical operations, adhering to strict aseptic techniques and infection control procedures.
  • Select and sterilize supplies, instruments, and special equipment for surgical procedures, demonstrating knowledge of surgical and anesthesia procedures.
  • Ensure equipment, supplies, and instruments are operational, assembled, and set up for required surgery, maintaining a sterile environment.
  • Use aseptic technique to prepare and maintain the sterile field of the operating room for surgery, identifying and addressing any breaks in technique.
  • Assemble and operate a wide variety of equipment, including microscopes, lights, laparoscopes, and ultrasound instrument washers, during operative procedures.
  • Determine intervals for sponge, needle, and instrument counts, performing them correctly and contributing to patient safety and comfort.
  • Assist surgeons and nurses during procedures, anticipating instruments required and handing them correctly, while maintaining a safe and controlled environment.
  • Handle tissue specimens and waste disposal according to unit policy and infection control procedures, ensuring a clean and organized workspace.
  • Participate in cleaning, sterilization, and supply maintenance in Central Supply, adhering to established procedures and protocols.
  • Accept on-call duty as assigned, maintaining a high level of professionalism and adaptability.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); no exceptions.
  • Graduate from a Surgical Technology Program with a license as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) and maintain throughout employment.
  • Must be certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) and maintain throughout employment.
  • Must possess a license as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST), no substitutions, and maintain throughout employment.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of sterilization, asepsis, and infection control.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology to communicate effectively with the surgical team.
  • Knowledge of human body structure and function to assist nurses, surgeons, and anesthetists/anesthesiologists with procedures.
Work Environment:

The Surgical Technician will work in a fast-paced operating room environment, regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and risk of radiation. The noise level is usually moderate.
