Role Summary
The Medication Assistant (MA) acts as a caregiver, delivering resident-focused nursing care and daily living support to assigned individuals under the guidance of a licensed nurse. The MA is knowledgeable in providing age-appropriate care that addresses both the physical and psychological needs of residents according to their care plans. Responsibilities include assisting with essential health care tasks such as bathing, grooming, dressing, and recording vital signs, as well as offering psycho-social support and personal care.
The MA may help residents with mobility, utilizing proper techniques and equipment for transferring and repositioning, and may also engage in exercises to promote physical well-being. In addition, the MA is responsible for food preparation and ensuring a positive dining experience for residents, including assistance with meals and hydration.
Administering prescribed medications as directed by a licensed nurse is a key responsibility, along with documenting care outcomes, medication administration, and any changes in resident conditions. The MA will communicate any concerns to the charge nurse and may collect non-invasive specimens and vital signs. Housekeeping and laundry services may also be part of the role to maintain clean living environments for residents.
Qualifications
A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred but not mandatory. Candidates should be at least 18 years old, with prior experience in clinical or nursing assistant roles in long-term care being advantageous.
Completion of annual competency testing and maintenance of continuing education credits is required, with a minimum of 12 hours of education mandated annually based on state regulations. Certification requirements vary by state, including Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification in certain locations.
