PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Deliver personalized music therapy services to patients in hospice care and their families, whether in residential settings or alternative care environments.
  • Conduct thorough evaluations and implement tailored interventions to address the unique needs of each individual.
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team and other expressive therapists to assess patient referrals and prioritize therapeutic interventions.
  • Engage in team meetings to discuss patient care and contribute insights as needed.
  • Provide education to hospice staff regarding the role and benefits of music therapy in supporting patients and families.
  • Advise team members on utilizing music to fulfill specific patient and family needs.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of all services provided.
  • Offer bereavement support to family members as deemed appropriate by the care team.
  • Facilitate support groups when requested.
  • Oversee the inventory and maintenance of music therapy equipment.
  • Conduct training sessions and assist with community outreach initiatives as required.
  • Support the orientation and training of interns, volunteers, and new staff members.
  • Assist in memorial services upon request.
  • Be available for urgent situations requiring immediate attention.
  • Adapt to the needs of patients and families, including working evenings and weekends as necessary.
  • Supervise and develop internship programs for music therapy students.
  • Participate in agency committees as assigned.
  • Be part of the on-call rotation for counseling services during weekends and holidays.

MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES

  • No direct management responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  1. Board Certification in Music Therapy.
  2. A minimum of one year of experience in music therapy, preferably in hospice care, or completion of a music therapy internship with a focus on terminally ill patients.
  3. Possess a soothing singing voice and proficiency in playing an accompanying instrument.
  4. Ability to apply music therapy techniques to assist patients and families with:
  • Visual and motor stimulation, communication barriers
  • Management of pain, anxiety, and restlessness
  • Emotional expression and support
  • Addressing feelings of isolation and grief
  • Encouraging meaningful engagement and spiritual expression
Familiarity with developmental stages in children and appropriate music activities.Understanding of differing adult and child responses to grief and life-threatening conditions.Capacity to create a safe and expressive environment through music.Experience in facilitating group sessions is preferred.Ability to physically handle and transport music instruments and related equipment weighing up to 60 lbs.Valid driver's license and reliable transportation with necessary insurance coverage.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This role involves medium to heavy physical activity, requiring the ability to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds frequently. The position necessitates various physical movements, including lifting, standing, and walking, along with effective communication and sensory skills. Employees may encounter environmental elements and health risks associated with patient care.
